Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine. Threads pipe using threading machine. Bends pipe by hand or with pipe-bending tools and machine. Mounts pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe. Assembles and installs a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded caulked, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools. Secures pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools. Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meter, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping. Tests piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks. Welds pipe supports to structural steel members. Observes production machines in assigned area of manufacturing facility to detect machinery malfunctions. Loads, transports, and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies. Performs minor maintenance of cleaning activities of tools and equipment. The incumbent of this position is a Sprinkler System Mechanic/Pipefitter in Engineering Service at the VA Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Columbus, Ohio Incumbent installs, maintains, repairs and tests plumbing fixtures, water supply lines, drain lines, steam generating and using equipment, the steam distribution and condensate return system. Duties also include the installing, maintaining, repairing and testing of the building sprinkler system, fire hydrants, and the site sprinkler system. * Performs preliminary work such as estimating materials required and locating and marking areas where work is to be done. * Installing, repairing or replacing sprinkler system controls, to include the diagnosing of system problems as they relate to control valves. * Replacing main sprinkler system electric valves and components, i.e., isolation valves, pipe connections, etc. * Installs piping and fixtures for lawn sprinkler systems, wash basins, bath tubs, century tubs, water closets, urinals, water cooling units, grease traps, garbage disposal units, etc. * Installs and repairs main valves in accordance with specifications and blueprints. * Repairs and/or replaces piping and fixtures such as drinking fountains, showers, floor drains, pneumatic tube system, etc. * Repairs and adjusts mixing valves on showers and continuous flow tubs. * Installs, maintains, and repairs hot water tanks, radiators, and instantaneous hot water generators. * Install, repair and perform other work on the steam generating equipment, the steam distribution system and the condensate return system. Repairs and/or replaces condensate return pumps, replace bearings and seals. * Will install or replace insulation on piping or equipment. * Performs preventive maintenance by clearing stoppages by checking piping, sump pumps, fittings and fixtures for defects and by making necessary repairs. * Uses all tools on the trade: pipe threaders, power hack saws, Hilti rotary drill hammer, pipe wrenches, jack hammers, and small hand tools, screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, benders, soldering tools, etc. * Performs preventive maintenance on steam traps. * Adjust and maintain all alarms on steam and water system. * Performs backflow preventer tests as necessary. * Receives work assignments from the Supervisory General Engineer, either orally or through written work orders and accomplishes assigned tasks utilizing building plans, diagrams and engineering drawings. The incumbent accomplishes assigned tasks with little or no supervision. * The incumbent is responsible for accurately completing work orders and labor reports daily and completing 2237 requests for required parts and materials. * The incumbent is responsible for knowing and practicing good workmanship. May tack weld assemblies together. - Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor. - Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun. - Starts power supply to produce electric current. - Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece. - Manually guides electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle. - May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal. - May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. - May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. - May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper. - May preheat work piece, using hand torch or heating furnace. - May cut metal plates or structural shapes. - Examines weld for bead size and other specifications. - Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies. - May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation. - Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment. - Assists other mechanics as needed. - Respiratory protection is common and may be required. - Required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards. Scope of Responsibility: This position performs production within prescribed codes, and according to prescribed procedures, specifications, and drawings. Must complete Welder Training Program. Essential Duties: * Ability to plan, organize, pay attention to details and multi-task in a fast paced work environment * Works Independently with minimal supervision once assignments or responsibilities outlined and delegated. Not hesitant to resolve lack of clarity, structure, or definition of outcomes then moves ahead. * Actively seeks and supports continuous improvement activities in process efficiencies, costs and effectiveness of work * Knowledge of general safety guidelines and Sabre's quality expectations and application in the work place * Uses the Flux Cored Arc Welding process to tack weld various small components to round or formed shafts to make a pole assembly for the welder to weld. The pole assembly generally consists of a round tube or formed shaft, baseplate, hand hole, arm mounting simplex, tenon top, vangs, step lugs, ladder clips, and/or other small parts. * Works in Large Pole department on individual fitter station to assemble pole assembly. Assist material handler in loading round tube or formed shaft on individual fitter station. * Reads and interprets drawings to determine parts needed to assemble pole assembly. Locate and gather Storeroom Personnel staged parts needed for assembly from parts staging area. Frequently pushes, pulls, and lifts up to 50 pounds. * Reads and interprets drawing to assure proper location of various small part attachments. Layout various locations on round tube or formed shaft based upon interpretation of drawings and specifications. * Uses measuring tape, level, square, and angle finders to measure distances and angles. Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Uses table to convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. * Uses plasma torch and oxy-fuel torch to cut steel. Uses jigs made at Sabre/Texas for laying out vang slots and for cutting holes in shafts for inserting hand hole rims, arm mounting simplex, couplings, and other small parts. Wear protective goggles or welding hood to protect eyes from harmful rays. * Moves around round tube or formed shaft as necessary to get into proper position to accurately measure and assemble components described above including standing on elevated platform when necessitated by the size of the shafts. * Uses motorized grinders, motorized buffers, stone grinders, and drills to help assemble pole assembly according to prescribed specifications, codes and drawing. Wears protective face shield and safety glasses to protect eyes and face. * Adjusts welding machine to achieve desired results within parameters of established welding procedures. Changes tips, ceramic cups, and electrodes in plasma torch as needed to achieve desired cutting results. * Finish weld various products of the unit to keep the product moving through the large pole department in a timely manner. Reads and interprets weld symbols. * Uses oxy-fuel torch to preheat parts prior to welding. Read codes and specifications to determine proper temperature and uses instruments provided to measure temperature. * Uses chipping hammer, wire brush, motorized grinder, and motorized wire brush at various times to clean welded areas. * Uses pneumatic drills and magnetic drills to drill and ream various sizes holes in poles as required by the drawing. * Wears protective equipment, including safety glasses, insulated welding gloves, welding cap, leather sleeves, and/or cape, and welding hood for protection against hot metal, arc rays, grinding debris, and other potentially. * Performs visual inspecting and identifies material discrepancies to assure welds have been completed satisfactorily in compliance with applicable drawings and specifications. Uses a weld gauge to measure weld size. * When called for by the drawings and specifications, must produce full-penetration welds as defined by American Welding Society code. Uses air-arc gouger to remove weld defects, and rewelds to meet specifications. * Uses overhead crane to load finished poles into bolsters for transportation out of the pole assembly area. * Welds other products in other areas, using either Flux-Cored Arc Welding or Gas Metal Arc Welding process. * Assist and instructs other welders and fitters when needed to overcome deficiencies in quality and/or productivity. * Additional duties as assigned Position Requirements: * High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred * Must have knowledge of basic shop mathematics, addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication and decimals. * Proficiency in reading complex prints and specifications. * Must know how to properly use a weld gauge. * Read and write. Physical Requirement * Must be able to stand 100% of scheduled shift. Lifting, pushing, prying, and dragging heavy materials. * Must be capable of bending, stooping, crawling under or over and occasional climbing of stairs/ladders heights up to 6 or 7 feet. * Abnormal level of noise due to grinding, chipping, hammering requires hearing protection (ear plugs) be worn at all times. * Must possess adequate dexterity and stamina to sustain expected production effectively. * Must be able to work in fast-paced work environment * Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. * Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, twisting and handling of materials. * Position requires manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness and a safety-minded individual. * Must be able to work in an open environment exposed to extreme temperatures.
