Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to be based in the Cleveland, OH office.
We are looking for an enthusiastic mechanical engineering intern to provide support for our Cleveland Mechanical Department. You will have. As a mechanical engineering intern, you will collaborate with our mechanical engineering.
This internship will help you acquire engineering skills and provide you with knowledge of various engineering strategies. Ultimately, you will gain broad experience in architecture, engineering, and the construction design process.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Collect creative and technical content
Support the mechanical engineering team in daily tasks
Assist in review of project submittals
Help process and distribute engineering materials
Assist in creating CAD models and detailed 2D technical drawings using software such as AutoCAD and Revit.
Assist with fieldwork and document existing conditions of mechanical/plumbing systems.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
* Candidates must be pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering and must have completed at least two years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a bachelor's degree and plan to continue with a master's degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor's degree in the most recent school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
* Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Assist in the production of all phases of the design process.
General knowledge in HVAC or MEP
Some Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit.
Knowledgeable in the Microsoft Office Suite of programs.

Duties may include but is not limited to: installation of environmental soil borings and monitoring wells (both manually with a hand auger and also with a licensed drilling subcontractor), collection and documentation of soil and groundwater samples for laboratory analysis, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, environmental permitting, installation of environmental remediation systems, implementation of both in-situ and ex-situ remedial actions, underground storage tank installation and removal, and underground storage tank system inspections, and ability to gain working knowledge of Federal, State, and local environmental regulations.
The STRIVE Internship Program is a 12-week experience running from May 18, 2026 through August 7, 2026. Interns are required to be fully available during Week 1 (May 18--22) and Week 12 (August 3--7) of the program. Week 12 includes company-paid travel to an APTIM office (location to be announced) for an end-of-internship celebration.
Interns are expected to minimize absences to ensure a meaningful program experience. The program observes Memorial Day (May 25, 2026) and Independence Day (July 3, 2026, observed).
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
Provides technical support to clients in a variety of work scopes including but not limited to: environmental site characterization, monitoring, permitting, regulatory reporting, Phase I and Phase II due diligence, and residential and commercial construction.
Collects and interprets soil, groundwater, and air samples.
Oversight of drilling activities, including but not limited to direct push, hollow stem auger, and sonic drilling as well as directional drilling.
Basic land surveying skills such as top of casing surveys.
Performs overspill bucket inspections/sampling for underground storage tanks.
Executes field work, maintains project schedule and budgetary goals, and supervises contractors.
Conducts work independently or as part of a project team and can adjust to rapidly changing site conditions or client requirements.
Adheres to established health and safety policies and procedures and executes work in a safe and conscientious manner.
Conducts Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and Phase II Environmental Site Investigations in accordance with ASTM Standards and client requirements.
Supports environmental permitting and permit compliance projects.
Drafts technical documents for regulatory agencies and private clients.
Understands technical concepts, evaluation results, plans, reports, and ensures conformance to applicable technical standards as well as company policies and procedures.
Manages own schedule and balances multiple priorities to meet project targets and deadlines.
Utilizes best practices and knowledge of internal and external business systems to improve products or services as a collaborative member of the APTIM team.
Duties

also include overlap with APTIM's industrial hygiene group including inspections, assessment and sampling for asbestos, lead-based paint and other material concerns.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineer
0-1+ years of experience participating in various scopes associated with environmental site assessment and technical report preparation.
Must have a valid Driver's License.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to travel as needed with occasional overnight stays.
Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, scientific computer programs
The following certifications are a plus: 40-hour OSHA-HAZWOPER training, OSHA 10-Hour, or Licensed Asbestos Inspector

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $23 to $25 per hour. Compensation depends on several factors including experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
