QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Completions of an associate degree or 2-year college/technical school in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or related field preferred; and
  • A minimum of two (2) years of commercial, residential, and component plans examining experience.
  • Prior experience as a commercial and/or residential builder, or as a commercial and/or residential building inspector with ICC Commercial and/or Residential Combination Inspector licenses preferred.

  • Or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.

  • Possess or obtain both ICC Residential and Commercial Plans Examiner certification within eighteen (18) months of employment required.

  • Spanish bi-lingual written and verbal communication skills highly preferred, but not required.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License and be eligible for coverage under the City of Kyle vehicle insurance provider.

Any individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.

Our team of interdisciplinary code professionals work collaboratively to assure client designs comply with life-safety requirements of the international codes. Our history with local and regional jurisdictions and tribal governments includes plan review, field inspection, and interim building official.

Stantec's Phoenix office is looking for an experienced, certified individual who is responsible for approving moderately complex commercial and residential projects such as new construction, tenant improvements, remodels, additions, and small structures based on applicable codes, ordinances, and administrative directives which are enforced by the jurisdictions that Stantec Consulting Services provides services. The desired candidate is also responsible for various field assignments when staffing needs arise. Experience in the office and field are critical for success in this position.

Responsibilities include reviewing, interpreting, and approving construction phases and building plans and specifications; providing concise written documents communicating deficiencies; document maintenance; and client and applicant interactions to communicate requirements and find solutions. Candidates work with all international codes which are complex and require a variety of interpretations based upon the specific conditions of each construction project, including the scope of work to be performed, nature of work, age of existing building, codes applicable during the original construction, and current code requirements.

Your Key Responsibilities
Advise applicant regarding plan or construction deficiencies. Research and enter technical data as required for sites, permits, or plans information into Word documents, various client software programs, and Microsoft Office files. Maintain knowledge of code updates and ordinance changes and attends seminars for continuing education on code and ordinance changes. Review and inspect new and remodel construction and supplemental documents to approve or deny applications for commercial and residential construction projects. Interpret codes and inform applicants of construction code requirements. Assist Project Manager Assistant and department management in technical and customer problem resolutions for all projects. Provide customer service and commitment to support business growth and profitability.


Your Capabilities and Credentials
Ability to:

Cooperate with internal and external Stantec clients and the public. Read and accurately interpret plans and specifications. Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies. Measure dimensions using engineer's and architect's scales. Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, or other visual aids. Work safely without presenting a threat to self or others. Navigate uneven surfaces, climb ladders, work safely around heavy equipment, and perform duties on various jobsites. Knowledge to apply code requirements and make independent decisions to ensure life safety in the field, Stantec office, and home office.

Knowledge of:

International Council Codes (IBC, IMC, IPC, IRC, etc.) including building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing as applied to new and existing residential and commercial construction projects and moderately complex projects. Various construction materials and methods and stages of construction. Mathematical principles required to perform related technical calculations. Microsoft Office at a proficient level. Driver's license with satisfactory driving record required for inspection assignments.

Must possess the following certifications:

Minimum four (4) International Code Council Certifications Minimum two certifications to be Building Plans Examiner, Residential Plans Examiner, Building Inspector, and/or Residential Inspector Other certifications to be in mechanical, plumbing, or electrical disciplines. Other job experience or certifications may be considered.


Education and Experience
Five to seven years of experience reviewing and inspecting plans, schedules, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, ordinance, and related regulations. Other combinations of experience and education meeting the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
