Job Highlights * $29.19 per hour to start. Current top operator pay is $39.87 per hour. OT is available and encouraged. Description Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Apprentice / Transitional Operator Vacant Position(s): 1 Department: Environmental Resources APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED THROUGH SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2026. Salary Range: SEE BELOW Grade: SEE BELOW Hours: 12 Hour Rotating Shifts Including Weekends Position Summary: Under direct supervision of the Operations Shift Supervisor, and leadership from the Operator, this associate while in a training capacity, assists in the performance of all required job duties to produce treated effluent that meet all state and federal regulations. Essential Functions: Residuals treatment and disposal meeting all state and federal regulations. Collect and analyze samples for control and optimization of all treatment plant processes. Conduct bench-top tests for control and optimization of all treatment plant processes. Required to work with chemicals. Monitor and insure that all equipment is in proper working condition; communicate with the shift supervisor and/or maintenance department personnel concerning problems encountered. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment as required. Monitor and operate the most economical and efficient equipment based upon treatment process needs, distribution system demands, and power consumption. Must be able to maneuver large valve operator wheels and chain mechanisms. Ability to lift, carry and/or pour 50 pound bags of dry chemicals from a height of four feet from the floor. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion. On occasion this can require greater than 50 lbs of force. Objects greater than 50 lbs require a two-person operation. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. Routinely ascend/descend ladders, stairs and ramps as high as thirteen (13) stories. Ability to work at elevated height levels as needed to perform various task. Constantly positions self to move, traverse for long distances as necessary to perform required work. Must be able to move about extensively to make inspections of treatment plant with varied topography and features. Ability to work 12 hour shifts, rotating. Ability to navigate restricted spaces such as chemical pits, spiral stairwell, etc as needed to perform required job functions. Must be able to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) to perform the required essential functions. Transitional Wastewater Treatment Plant OPERATOR Salary Range: $49,192.00 ($23.65/hr) - $73,798.40 ($35.48/hr) The candidate demonstrating the following abilities may be placed at a Grade 106: Must successfully complete a proficiency in the job skills required for each level as outlined in the CWS Apprenticeship Program for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator. Associate Degree in a Technical/Mechanical field and minimum of three years relevant industrial experience, for example - chemical manufacturing, industrial boilers, nuclear operator, water/wastewater treatment plan; OR Combination of education/experience to equal 6 years; OR has Obtained a “D” level Water/Wastewater License. Additional education preferred beyond high school. Once fully proficient (as outlined by the Operator Apprenticeship Program), the Transitional Operator will advance to Journeyman Operator. Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator / Journeyman operator Salary Range: $63,107.20 ($30.34/hr) - $97,822.40 ($47.03/hr) The candidate demonstrating the following abilities may be placed at a Grade 109: Must have a minimum of two years of experience operating in a surface water treatment plant or secondary wastewater treatment plant. Must comply with requirements of the Operator Apprentice Program or the Incumbent Accelerated Journeyman Program. Good working knowledge of regulations and treatment techniques to resolve problems meeting permit limits. Working knowledge of statistics and control charting. Independently start, operate, adjust, stop, maintain, and perform various operational repairs on multi-fuel (oil and natural gas) power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Maintain efficient combustion levels and ensure compliance with air pollution laws or regulations. * Monitor, adjust, and control all phases of boiler plant operations through the use of manual, automatic, or microprocessor controls or control systems. * Use meters, gauges, and computer-generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper boiler operations or changing load requirements. * Adjust equipment as necessary for efficient operation, to include equipment such as alarm devices, burner tips, semi-automatic combustion controls, feed-water deaerators and heaters, fuel heaters, internal chemical injection equipment, automatic stop valves, forced and induced draft fans, fuel and steam pressure control and relief valves, feed water regulators and pumps. * Operate, adjust, and maintain auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as electrical or steam driven pumps, forced and induced draft fans, air compressors, de-aerating equipment, feed water heaters, automatic stokers, economizers, fuel heaters and delivery equipment, and de-mineralizing systems. * Adjust fuel feeds and volume and velocity of draft and other fire box variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands. * Regularly observe and note readings on gauges, meters, detectors, recorders, boiler water level indicators, and computer generated and analog displays to detect danger signals in operations. * Remove boiler and auxiliaries from the line if malfunction cannot be corrected during operation. * Determine the treatment and chemicals to be used to control chemical concentrations, remove impurities and entrapped gases, or stabilize fluctuating water conditions in the boiler. * Check the operation of safety equipment such as flame extinction, automatic re-ignition, low water cut-outs, high pressure cut-outs, and purge type combustion safeties. * Perform operational maintenance (e.g., lubricate equipment and power clean water tubes) and make repairs of limited/moderate complexity (e.g., replace or repair valves, gauges, and pumps) on mechanical parts and systems. May be required to perform limited or basic electrical repairs. * Conduct various tests of boilers and inspects for leaks, corrosion and pitting. Serve as "operator- in-charge" of the complete plant, on second and third shift. * Apply thorough knowledge of the entire steam or hot water system and user requirements to locate problems and initiate immediate corrective action to maintain adequate steam or hot water production. * Maintain regular and punctual attendance. * Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Comprehensive knowledge of all operational phases of power boiler plant operations (e.g., water treatment, fuel systems, steam generation, and pollution control) and their interrelationships for efficient and economical generation of steam or high temperature hot water (HTHW). * Knowledge of the principles and theories pertaining to combustion, heat transfer, and steam or HTHW generation in the operation of power boiler plants. In addition, they apply a thorough knowledge of the structural and operating characteristics of single and multiple- fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment or systems. * Thorough knowledge of water treatment procedures and water analysis, using standard chemical tests; and thorough knowledge of water treatment equipment and systems (e.g., cation/anion exchange units for demineralization of feed-water). * Practical knowledge of environmental law and knowledge of procedures or adjustments during combustion to control pollutants in flue emissions. * Thorough knowledge of the steam or HTHW distribution systems, user requirements, casualty control procedures, and how to bypass a section of the system to maintain service. * Knowledgeable of maintenance requirements (e.g., cleaning fuel guns, lubricating equipment, and power cleaning water tubes) and procedures necessary to perform operational repairs of limited to moderate complexity (e.g., repair or replace valves, gauges, water pipes, and refractory linings). * Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS * Skilled in procedures and adjustments necessary to start, operate, and maintain a power boiler facility. * Ability to operate power boilers and stabilize boilers in a closed system when one boiler starts to go down while maintaining safe levels and efficient combustion. * Ability to read and analyze information from gauges, meters, recorders, analog displays, and computer-generated data to determine the operational status of the facility and necessary adjustments. * Skilled in the operation and adjustment of associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Primary Role Working alone or as a member of a team, and under the guidance of a Lead Operator, Supervisor or Manager, provides for the safe operation of wastewater facilities in an assigned area(s) in such a manner as to support a Supervisor or other Operators in complying with the requirements for distributing wastewater treatment and collection as established by the company and state and federal governmental regulatory agencies. Key Accountabilities Operates, and performs routine duties and care of a wide variety of specialized equipment and apparatus in a plant/treatment facility and/or collection system including pumps, motors, chlorinators, chemical preparation, and feeding; physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment processes; control equipment and monitoring equipment. Washes clarifiers, filter beds, contact basins, operates sludge handling equipment and other process unit equipment, as required. Collects samples and performs routine in-lab tests as required. Maintains a log of operations and maintenance activities and related records. Operates system to maintain compliance with permit requirements. Good knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the O&M of industrial facilities and ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations.
