SHIFT: Friday - Tuesday 11:00PM - 7:00AM Monitor and operate combined heat and power plant and chilled water systems and connected equipment controls. Ensure plant operations are performed safely and efficiently; monitor and respond to changes in operating conditions to maintain continuous plant performance; as directed perform operations work order duties and routines. Drew University is seeking a Seasonal Weekend Boiler Operator for day and night shifts in the Facilities Department . This is a part-time, seasonal weekend position that will operate from the start to the end of the heating season, approximately October 1st to May 1st. Employee will be responsible for the continuous, reliable and safe operation of all University building hot water and low-pressure steam boiler plants and associated heating systems. Primary duties will include monitoring boiler performance, conduct routine inspections, and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions. Additional duties may be assigned. Key Responsibilities: Operate and maintain single and multiple fuel-fired water and/or fire tube boilers and associated auxiliary equipment at the central heating plant as well as all other building boiler plants. Adjusts fuel feeds and the volume and velocity of draft and other firebox variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands or variations in fuel quality and regularly observes and notes readings on gauges, meters, detectors, recorders, boiler water level indicators, and computer generated and analog displays to detect danger signals in operations. Performs water testing and blowdowns as needed for all low-pressure steam boilers. Maintains documentation regarding EPA, DEP, state, and local codes for compliance. Completes campus boiler plant rounds in all required campus properties throughout the shift. Makes logbook entries and conducts maintenance. Check, record, and report fuel and water levels. Keeps boiler and machine rooms safe and clean. Inspects to ensure proper operation of and fills water softeners around campus. Job Description Key Responsibilities: Operate and monitor boilers and cogeneration systems in strict adherence to New Jersey Boiler and Pressure Vessel Compliance standards, ensuring safe and efficient performance. Role Summary: This position is for the Northern New Jersey Service Area and supports NSU's Operations. The role provides operations and maintenance support for the Northern NJ Service Area with the supervision by the NSA Supervisor. As an Operator in Training (OIT), you will gain hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities and be guided in obtaining your wastewater operator license. The OIT will work independently with guidance from senior operators and supervisors, learning how to manage time effectively while completing assigned tasks and ensuring client satisfaction. Duties & Responsibilities: Assist with critical testing of facility operations, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine, etc., under the guidance of a licensed operator to monitor system conditions and maintain regulatory compliance. Learn to complete Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) in accordance with facility permits, with assistance from the operations team. Perform general preventative maintenance on treatment plant equipment such as blower oil, filter and belt changes and pulling and inspecting submersible pumps, etc. (Further defined below in addendum A) Maintain accurate, legible records of all phases of facility operations, equipment maintenance, and inspections. Assist in preparing monthly written operating reports based on facility operations and maintenance records for clients, employers, or regulatory agencies. Report plant issues, problems, and repairs to the supervisor in a timely and accurate manner. Adhere to EH&S policies and processes and report any safety hazards, ensuring safe operations at all times. Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation as directed. Participate in discussions about plant operations with supervisors, clients, regulatory personnel, and visitors under supervision. Collect, log, and submit required samples to laboratories, ensuring accurate documentation and tracking. Operate plants with guidance to meet all regulatory compliance standards. Assist maintenance personnel with equipment removal tasks such as pumps, blowers, motors, and valves, learning the proper procedures. Maintain records for gasoline, mileage, timesheets, expenses, etc., as directed. Work scheduled weekends and occasional holidays for assigned routes. Project a positive image to clients, regulatory agencies, engineers, and other operators. Confined Space Entry - Required to complete thorough training provided by NSU, with occasional use in the field. Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
