In order to ensure efficient and reliable operation of all systems and equipment in the provision of heating, cooling, normal power generation, emergency power generation and all other associated utilities to the Hospital, the Chief Engineer is responsible to manage and control all aspects of the day to day operations including supervision of staff, for the power plant and CHP systems..
Principal duties and responsibilites include but are not limited to:
Provide a balanced and efficient power plant operation to meet the changing energy requirements with quality workmanship and standards to ensure an environment of comfort and safety for patients, staff and visitors. Review daily, weekly and monthly operational logs including the State log book for accuracy and completeness. Ensure all required inspections are completed in a timely manner. Identify any irregularities and evaluate the need for adjustments in operation or practice. Ensure the power plant is running efficiently and reliably and in full compliance with all Federal, State and local regulatory requirements including all parameters identified in operating permits. Provide and maintain scheduling of the Watch Engineers to provide for system testing, scheduled and preventative maintenance and overall housekeeping within the power plant, fire pump room and emergency generator equipment enclosure. Responsible for scheduling, assignment, performance and review of the power plant's preventative maintenance tasks, service and repair to the watch engineers or vendors and review completed tasks for accuracy, completeness and workmanship. Provide project management and supervision of the fire alarm system both within the power plant and the auxiliary devices in the entire building, under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Maintain all Federal, State and locally required records of power plant operation. Make appropriate daily entries in the State Engineer's Record book (log) on steam boilers and ensure all required inspections are kept updated as required by law. Provide training for the watch engineers to ensure that they are competent in the maintenance and operation of all systems and their components in the power plant. Use power plant and equipment manuals for reference. Each watch engineer should become and remain fully qualified to operate the power plant once they have experienced a full heating and cooling season as reviewed by the Director of Facilities or designee. Develop watch engineer competencies to test the knowledge of all watch engineers annually or as required based on personal observations during the day to day operation of the power plant. Assists the Director of Facilities or designee with annual performance evaluations, training and corrective action processes of the watch engineers. Maintain appropriate spare parts for power plant equipment. Adjust parts inventory annually based on historical equipment needs and personal observations/evaluations. Respond to power plant/hospital emergencies during your normal work shifts as well as responding during off hours to calls regarding equipment or systems within the power plant's assigned scope of responsibility in order to minimize the threat of injury or damage to the Hospital or its occupants. Oversee chemical treatment and chemical training for all chemical dependant systems within the power plant including all cooling towers. Qualifications
High school graduate required. Steam engineering school classes required. 2nd Class Engineer License is required. U.S.T. Class A/B Operator Grade I (or higher) is preferred. At least 5+ years of progressive hospital power plant experience including 3+ years of direct staff supervision strongly preferred Must be capable of lifting 75 pounds from a ground elevation to a shoulder height elevation. Staff adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards Ability to read and understand complex plans and schematics associated with equipment typically found in a power plant environment.
