Job Summary The Operating Engineer (Plant Operator) will be a key member of Baton Rouge/LSU Plant Operations reporting directly to the Director of Operations. They are responsible for the day to day operations, repair and maintenance support duties and troubleshooting of the central utility plant and building mechanical systems. Work with the Operations Supervisor and Lead Operating Engineer to perform maintenance programs and procedures. Develop an understanding of troubleshooting of the plant, distribution system, interface systems and energy transfer stations. Work in a safe manner while following applicable regulatory requirements. Follow plant operational procedures to ensure the accomplishment of plant production goals. Monitor and report on system performance to meet or exceed plant production goals. Investigate, take corrective action, and report on plant outages in an effort to minimize impact to customer services. Manage outage timetables that optimize cost effectiveness while insuring reliability. Develop proficiency as a plant operator in conjunction with cultivating skills in the calibration and troubleshooting of automation, power, and interface systems. As the shift schedule dictates, will be available on a 24-hour basis, to assist in emergency situations and fill vacancies in the shift rotation as directed by the Operations Supervisor. Track and log operational system status using applicable journals and control system tools. Understand system-operating requirements, identify trends, perform routine analysis and make recommendations for operating adjustments. Perform maintenance and repairs on building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Skills & Qualifications High School Diploma or GED is required. Additional studies and courses in a technical discipline would be a plus. Training, licenses, or certifications in plant operations considered advantageous. One (1) to five (5) years' experience in operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of central heating and cooling plants. Highly professional ethical standards are expected. Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems is expected. Experience with large scale plant automation, startup, commissioning, and energy management activities is a plus. ABOUT THE ROLE Captain is to be responsible for managing our vessels, vessel personnel, and all barges in tow. Captains are responsible for crew members' safety and their well-being while on our vessel. Captains must adhere to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies. WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH Captains are expected to navigate the vessel in a safe manner and ensure safety rules are followed by everyone. Captains will manage the daily efficiency of the vessel, along with the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel. Directs and coordinates barge and towing operations, ensuring adherence to safety and environmental protocols and industry regulations. Responsible for supervising safe and efficient operation and performance of crew, vessel and tow and for ensuring that the equipment is kept neat and in good working order. Ensures that Company policies and protocols are followed; report all violations of policies, or violations of Maritime Federal or State regulations to Marine Operations Manager. Routine maintenance and operation of all machinery aboard the vessel, or tow. Manages crews, reporting anticipated crew shortages; directs crew in daily operations, providing training. Sets the watch standing schedule for their crew, ensuring that no licensed wheelman works more than 12 hours in any 24 hour period. Reports Boat Position; barges with cargo; time and location of exchange of barges; estimated time of arrival/departure; report delay time, place and cause; quality of fuel aboard and received, and any other pertinent information. Maintains the Vessel Daily Log and see that it is updated at the end of each 6 hour watch by themselves or their relief. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Education: High school diploma or equivalent Required Work Experience: 5-10 years' experience operating Towing vessels, and moving barges in our working area 2 years' experience supervising a tow boat crew Required Training/Certifications: Captains must hold a Master of Towing / Mate of Towing Vessels or Master of 200 gross tons or more with towing vessels endorsement license issued by the United States Coast Guard, with a radar observer endorsement. Travel Requirements: Must be able to work 15 days on, 7 days off; stands watch for 12 hours each day, divided in to six hour shifts. Additional Requirements: Excellent communication skills, written and oral Demonstrable knowledge of local waterways and regulations Experience with electronic navigation systems and associated technology Ability to live in close quarters Demonstrable understanding of vessel maintenance, cargo handling equipment and operational procedures Ability to work well under pressure, in changing conditions Required to walk on irregular surfaces that may be muddy and in reduced lighting conditions on barges; walk up and down several flights of stairs, 2-3 times per day.
