The Plaquemines Parish Clerk of Court's Office is the repository of records dating back to the 1790s, although the parish itself was only established in 1807, just five years before Louisiana's admission into the Union.
The village was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, but it was abandoned for good after the destruction of a September 1860 hurricane.
In 1861, Fort Jackson served as an important Confederate defense for the city of New Orleans during the Civil War because it was at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
The August 1901 Hurricane caused damage, including 4 feet of water in Buras.
Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District was officially established in 1954 as a Political Subdivision of the State and Public Corporation of Louisiana, as per Act No.
