Plaquemines Parish Government company history timeline

1807

The Plaquemines Parish Clerk of Court's Office is the repository of records dating back to the 1790s, although the parish itself was only established in 1807, just five years before Louisiana's admission into the Union.

1860

The village was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, but it was abandoned for good after the destruction of a September 1860 hurricane.

1861

In 1861, Fort Jackson served as an important Confederate defense for the city of New Orleans during the Civil War because it was at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

1901

The August 1901 Hurricane caused damage, including 4 feet of water in Buras.

1954

Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District was officially established in 1954 as a Political Subdivision of the State and Public Corporation of Louisiana, as per Act No.

1960

In 1965 Hurricane Betsy damaged the area, flooding many buildings, including the Parish Courthouse, and causing nine deaths.

Interpersonal feuding weakened the family's hold on power, and by 1980, political opponents had begun to win local elections.

Even before the fire, efforts had begun in 2001 to move the parish seat and the courthouse to the west bank.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 would have certainly inundated the Clerk's Office with over fifteen feet of water, likely obliterating more than two centuries' worth of invaluable, irreplaceable historical records.

2015

Eventually, however, in late 2015 parish officials began construction on a new, state-of-the-art, $20 million, 3600 sq. ft. elevated courthouse on the site of the destroyed one.
