Plastics Industry Association company history timeline

1937

Founded in 1937, the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is the plastics industry trade association representing the third largest manufacturing industry in the United States.

1939

Nylon, which DuPont released for sale as synthetic silk hosiery in 1939 to much fanfare, was quickly rationed by the United States military for use in parachutes and ropes.

1941

A Dow chemist created expanded polystyrene (EPS) by accident in 1941 and the sturdy lightweight plastic became a useful thermal insulator and shock-absorber.

1965

The polysulfone family of thermoplastics, introduced in 1965, were most visibly used on the gold-film visors of Apollo-era space suits.

1991

PLASTICS created and launched the Operation Clean Sweep® program in 1991 to help the industry implement good housekeeping and pellet containment practices to work towards achieving zero pellet, flake, and powder discharge.

2018

In June of 2018, SU’s Courtney Asztalos, PPA’s Curator, visited Belva Green at her winter home in Florida.
