Job Description
Marine pipefitters are assigned to remove, repair, target, layout, fabricate, install and test marine piping systems onboard ships in various stages of repair and modernization.
Installs different types of sizes of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers.
Repair and replacement of ships' piping systems such as auxiliary salt water, fire main, potable water, hydraulic, compressed air, fuel oil, lube oil, engine exhaust, and more.
Necessary fabrication abilities include the use of various shop equipment such as table saws, pipe threading machines, bending machines (power as well as hand operated), drill presses and brazing equipment.
Bends, cuts, threads, shapes, fabricates, and installs pipe according to job specifications.
Conducts pressure test of piping installations. Checks and adjusts controls, gauges, and valves to achieve control of flow or pressure.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements:
Must have 5+ years of recent experience working in a shipyard as a pipefitter.
Must be able to pass all administered tests prior to being hired for the position.
Experience fitting carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe.
Must possess a good general knowledge of ship repair procedures and test requirements.
Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.
Must be able to read blueprints.
Must have a working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment naming convention.
Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Must be physically and medically capable to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job as prescribed under OSHA standards. PPE may include hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.

Position Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled Pipefitter II to join our shipyard team in Norfolk, VA. This role is responsible for the layout, fabrication, installation, and testing of piping systems aboard U.S. Navy and commercial vessels. The ideal candidate will have strong experience working in shipbuilding or ship repair environments and a thorough understanding of NAVSEA standards and shipboard systems.
Duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Lay out, fabricate, fit, and install pipe and tubing for a variety of fluid, drain, and pneumatic systems in accordance with drawings, MILSPECs, and NAVSEA standards for various systems (fluid, drain, fuel, hydraulic, air, ect.).
Install structural supports for piping systems and equipment.
Read and interpret maritime blueprints and specifications (standard and metric).
Perform basic pipe bending using hand or crank-style pipe benders.
Fit and install flanges, valves, and related piping components.
Execute tack welding as needed for assembly fit-up.
Perform hydrostatic pressure testing of installed systems following approved procedures.
Prepare and install system modifications (TEMPALTs, SHIPALTs, ORDALTs) in accordance with official directives and work instructions.
Pre-fabricate piping assemblies in a shop environment based on removed components and work instructions.
Perform brazing and operate gas-free equipment safely and effectively.
Plan and lay out piping systems allowing systems for system specs, structural penetrations, and physical obstructions.
Measure, cut, and bore holes in decks and bulkheads for piping system installations.
Operate shop equipment to cut, thread, and shape pipes and fittings.
Tests completed installations using hydrostatic or similar pressure testing techniques to ensure system integrity.
Identify and select appropriate piping materials for specific system requirements based on technical drawings.
Support additional duties as assigned in support of production or maintenance goals.
Qualifications:
3-5 years of maritime or shipyard pipefitting experience required.
Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Items, MILSPECs, and shipyard work instructions.
Strong understanding of shipboard mechanical systems and installations.
Must be able to obtain security clearance or meet access requirements for naval shipyards, if applicable.
Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job.
Must be able to pass an Audiogram & Respirator Fit Test.
Must be able to communicate effectively to exchange and comprehend information both verbally & electronically with customers & supervisors.

Operate pipe bending machines and torches; fabricate and install pipe hangers and supports.
Proficient at performing air, hydrostatic, static and operational tests on piping systems in accordance with safety and quality standards, including 009-71.
Calculate joint allowances, take-offs, and tolerances for butt welds, socket welds, braze and threaded joints.
Must be proficient in performing silver brazing (Grades 3, 4, and 5) and installing various MAF fittings.
Work independently and safely, following all applicable procedures, specifications, and safety regulations.
Must have the ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade including but not limited to, pipe benders, bandsaws, grinders, drills and pipe threaders. Also possess and maintain personal hand tools necessary to accomplish their trade.
Read and interpret Chemist and Competent Person reports to ensure safe conditions for hot work.
Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).

* Proficient at reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches; create fabrication sketches and targets for new installations and mock-ups.
* Install systems with or without blueprints, including building mock-ups and off-site prefabrication.
* Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to pipe fitting removals and installation.
* Prepare pipe joints for welding, brazing, soldering, threading or gluing, ensuring adherence to required tolerances.
* Operate pipe bending machines and torches; fabricate and install pipe hangers and supports.
* Proficient at performing air, hydrostatic, static and operational tests on piping systems in accordance with safety and quality standards, including 009-71.
* Calculate joint allowances, take-offs, and tolerances for butt welds, socket welds, braze and threaded joints.
* Must be proficient in performing silver brazing (Grades 3, 4, and 5) and installing various MAF fittings.
* Work independently and safely, following all applicable procedures, specifications, and safety regulations.
* Must have the ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade including but not limited to, pipe benders, bandsaws, grinders, drills and pipe threaders. Also possess and maintain personal hand tools necessary to accomplish their trade.
* Read and interpret Chemist and Competent Person reports to ensure safe conditions for hot work.
* Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
* Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
* Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).
Certification Requirements
* Must be certified to braze (Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5)
* Certified in LOK-Ring (MAF fittings)
Experience Requirements
* 4 - 6 years of experience as a Pipefitter in a shipyard. (1st Class)
* 2½ - 4 years of experience as a Pipefitter in a shipyard (2nd Class)
* 1½ - 3 years of experience as a Pipefitter in a shipyard. (3rd Class)
Other Requirements
* Must be able to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to airborne particles or fumes.
* Must be able to wear a respirator as required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit testing and respiratory protection protocols.
* Regularly required to sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and equipment.
* Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids).
* Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. independently and seek assistance for heavier loads.
* Must be able to pass Drug Screening, Work Ability Screening.
* Must be able to obtain a Government facility security pass and badges at the various shipyards Técnico works at (e.g., MHI, BAE, NASSCO, HII).

Summary/Objective:
A Service Plumber works day-to-day on assigned plumbing tasks. Ensures job quality and customer satisfaction is maintained in every stage of the project. Interacts with upper management and other trades to build lasting relationships. Creates the type of positive environment that works to maintain a sufficient and qualified work force. Reports to the cognizant foreman and operates under specific supervision in all types of weather conditions, frequently working at heights, using equipment, in a safe and professional manner.
Essential Functions:
Layout, assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, equipment, and fixtures of heating, cooling, domestic water, air, drainage systems, and gas according to company standards, specifications, and plumbing or mechanical code
Assisting and pumping out, maintaining, manufacturing pits and essential pump truck maintenance
Test pipes and fixtures using water and air to detect deficiencies
Safely measure, cut, thread, glue, solder, braze, and slope pipes composed of various materials
Provides guidance and direction to apprentices/helpers working under him/her.
Install hangers and supports for all plumbing systems
Perform other duties as assigned

Required:
3-5 years' light commercial and/or residential experience in field plumbing operations; or, equivalent combination of vocational training and experience
Ability to read and interpret blueprints
Extensive knowledge of all plumbing systems installation
Ability to fabricate offsets
Safe working knowledge of all hand and power tools
Able to install equipment
Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
Responsible for trade specific hand tools
Must be able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail and demonstrate problem-solving skills
Work Environment:
May work in varying temperatures; both inside and outside, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold and dampness
May work in areas with exposure to moderate/high noise levels
May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including dust
May be required to work in confined spaces or from high heights
Physical Demands:
This role routinely uses construction equipment such as heavy machinery, hand and power tools
