Plumber supervisor job description

Under general supervision, is responsible for organizing and supervising the activities of subordinates engaged in performing a wide variety of maintenance operations of water supply and distribution lines and facilities. The 7250 Utility Plumber Supervisor I is the first-level supervisor in the Utility Plumber series.
Supervises subordinate personnel including apprentice and journey-level Utility Plumbers.

The essential duties include but are not limited to the following:

1. Supervises a group of workers engaged in performing various skilled operations normally performed by utility plumbers, welders, carpenters, and others engaged in laying water supply and distribution lines and installing appurtenances, valves, meters and fittings. Insures the adherence to rigid time schedules when water is shut off in order to give maximum service to consumer.

2. Supervises groups of skilled and semi-skilled workers in making repairs to and painting buildings, structures and appurtenances; also to wooden trestles and bridges, road culverts; supervises repair of large diameter pipe line surfaces, including preparation for painting and the application of protective coatings.

3. Responds to complaints or emergencies arising in connection with the use, operation and maintenance of the water distribution system which necessitate prompt observation and determination and action; determines locations of valves related to each situation; makes shutdowns and later restores mains to service with regard to installations of new mains, repairs to existing mains, fire hydrant connections and large domestic fire sprinkler services.

4. Maintains and uses a main pipe and gate valve record book consisting of detailed drawings of the main pipe and gate valve system, coded by various symbols and colors, to denote and identify various important aspects; consults records before operating any valves.

5. Regulates water supply from various distribution reservoirs and in individual pressure districts by operating necessary valves.

6. Makes initial investigations to complaints involving water leaks, poor pressure, no water, holes in sidewalk or street; determines action necessary for making immediate repairs or dispatching service crews to the scene.

7. Keeps accurate records of time and work performed, equipment and materials used or recovered, and exact location of installations.

8. Responds to second and greater alarms of fire to regulate flow of water, as directed.

The Research Farms Department is seeking a Plumbing Supervisor that will report within the unit of Construction Services on the Research Farms. The position will include installing new plumbing systems including water mains, irrigation systems, hydrants, fixtures, and facilities; in addition to responding to service calls pertaining to the maintenance required of existing plumbing systems. They will be required to provide design review for proposed projects, perform material takeoffs, produce cost estimates, obtain permits and schedule inspections as required. Position will require the use of trade appropriate tools and equipment depending on the project.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Interpersonal communications; time management/planning; basic office software experience; and Driver's license preferred.

Backflow Preventer Certification a plus. High School diploma. Experience with trade appropriate equipment operation.

* Professionally represent ARS-Rescue Rooter to our customers including with visual, verbal and written expression.
* Manage productivity on installation/service jobs by helping to coordinate logistics for materials and equipment and holding field staff accountable to job time frames
* Maintain quality on installation/service jobs as measured by company standards, inspection pass rates and re-call rates.
* Maintain customer satisfaction on installation/service jobs by ensuring thorough communication and as measured by customer surveys and referral rates.
* Train and supervise field staff in installation/service methods and practices to achieve the above goals and to maintain safe practices.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

* Coordinate and schedule, manpower, materials and equipment for productivity
* Visit and inspect jobs for training purposes and to verify quality and safe practices
* Attend and/or facilitate meetings to train field staff on procedures and practices
* Provide technical assistance to mechanics as needed
* Assist with interviewing and hiring of plumbers
* Follow up with customers to address outstanding issues and ensure 100% satisfaction
* Prepare and take action on reports detailing productivity, quality and customer satisfaction by job type and plumbing crew.
* Assist with evening and weekend on-call coverage as necessary
* Other related duties and tasks as needs arise

Qualifications

* Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in installing/servicing plumbing systems including water heaters and excavation jobs
* Understanding and knowledge of hazards and safe practices on plumbing install and service jobs
* Demonstrated ability to plan labor, materials and logistics to optimize productivity
* Strong verbal and written communication skills including timely follow-up on needs/issues
* Prior supervisory experience preferred and/or combined with demonstrated ability to work proactively with associates to improve job quality and productivity.
* Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook applications
