1956

In 1956 the officers negotiated a journeyman wage scale of $3.171⁄2 per hour, insurance contribution of $.071/2 per hour and established an Apprentice Training Fund at $.01 per hour.

1959

However, by the fall of 1959 it was clear the program had outgrown those facilities.

1960

During the 1960’s Local 68 doubled in membership, adopted a Residential Branch and worked hundreds of members on apartments and housing.

Local 68’s annual Christmas Party for members’ children began in the 1960’s and remains one of the most popular events held today.

1964

In 1964 the Local established a Pension Plan with a contribution rate of $.10 hour.

1967

The apprentice school was moved to the Borden Milk plant on Oregon Street in Urbana, where it remained until the present union hall and apprentice training center was opened in 1967.

In 1967, Local 149 completed a $250,000 building south of Champaign on United States 45.

1968

In 1968 Local 68 purchased the property at 468 Link Road in Houston and built the first Union Hall owned by the members.

1975

In 1975 Local 68’s membership grew to almost 1500 with the merger of Local 567’s plumbers from the Bryan-College Station area.

1980

Things got worse with the election in 1980 of Ronald Reagan who fired striking air traffic controllers, signaling the start of a wave of anti-labor actions by private business.

1992

Not until the election of Bill Clinton in 1992 removed the curse of “trickle-down” economics did things begin to change.

1998

Local 68 continued to provide an excellent Christmas party for the membership and their children and started the Local’s 1st annual Saltwater Fishing Tournament in 1998.

2001

Elected in 2001, James Buchanan served as Business Manager for 15 years and took apprenticeship training to a new level, with the construction of a state-of-the-art training facility in Mokena, Illinois.
