The New York Times is looking for a leader to reimagine and guide its Newsroom Development and Support (NDS) team, a vital department responsible for ensuring the evolution of internal tools and practices that empower our journalists to produce their best work. You are a dynamic person who can lead the continuing transformation of those in the newsroom who create journalism and those who support its creation. You have a strong journalistic foundation to guide this department into its next chapter. And you have the flexibility required to oversee a team that includes journalists, technologists, trainers and project managers. The NDS team comprises two distinct groups: the editorial development arm designs training programs based on updated tools and develops curricula covering topics from clear writing to effective tagging; the newsroom technology group focuses on internal and external tools, including publishing, planning, and data management, and serves as the newsroom's liaison to product, design, and engineering teams. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities: * Oversee a team that trains journalists, ensures the user experience of those reliant on internal tools, and facilitates the creation of additional features and systems that allow us to measure progress against our goals. * Work in partnership with teams that have specialized expertise to facilitate training in media, like video and tools like AI. * Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. * You will report to a Deputy Managing Editor and Assistant Managing Editor. The perfect fit for this position will have a keen understanding of how a confluence of political and social forces is reshaping education in Texas. Most importantly, they will have a passion for managing and developing front-line journalists. The education editor will work with reporters to define how we approach topics, including student outcomes, school vouchers, religion in schools, district takeovers, limits on teaching about race and ethnicity, college readiness, academic freedom and university governance. The right editor will be equipped to guide reporters in producing breaking news, explainers, quick-turn enterprise, ambitious long-term projects and a weekly newsletter - all of which help Texans navigate a rapidly changing and highly consequential educational environment in a state that has an outsized influence over national policy. The education editor will report to the Tribune's managing editor for news and state affairs.
