DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Corrections Officer Trainee participates in formal training sessions and on-the-job assignments to develop skills and techniques in the custody and supervision of inmates in a state correctional facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a corrections officer. Work in this position involves the care, custody, control, and non-professional counseling of inmates.
Duties and other information for this position include:
Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.
Directing inmates and maintaining security in cellblocks, housing units, cottages, work areas, dining, and recreation areas, by monitoring the movement and activities of inmates.
Observing inmates and inmate behavior by making periodic and unannounced rounds, head counts, and security checks, and reporting anything unusual to a corrections officer.
Work a 40-hour work week with shifts to be determined, work any shift and work in all areas of the institution as assigned, work overtime as required by operation necessities and emergencies, work on those weekends and holidays which occur during your normal work schedule, and report to work under adverse weather conditions.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Participating in formalized instruction in the areas of sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and the facility's organizational structure.
Providing advice and guidance in assisting inmates in their adjustment to and participating in correctional processes and the Department's rules and regulations.
Prepare written reports.
Respond to emergency situations.

Starting hourly rate is $22.97.
Shift differential is up to $1.25 per hour.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:

The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.

Environmental Factors: Work is performed outside and in a patrol car, as well as in a standard office environment. Position Overview

To successfully complete the physical agility test, the participant must:
Run an obstacle course which begins by sitting in the driver's seat of a car, exiting the car and running 175 feet to an 8-foot ladder and ascend/descend five steps or rungs, then run 50 feet to and crawl for 12 feet and return, running 50 feet to the sitting position in the driver's seat of the car within 101 seconds.
Within two minutes of completing the obstacle course, the participant will pull a weighted object (150 pounds) for 25 feet from a standing position.
Immediately after the weight pull, the participant will run a distance of ¼ mile within 162 seconds.

Environmental Factors:
Work is performed outside and in a patrol car, as well as, in a standard office environment. Exposure to extreme temperatures and frequent time spent in outdoor environments varies on assignment. Frequent to constant use of a personal computer. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, and working to deadlines. Employees will be required to walk on uneven surfaces, wet areas, and outdoor terrain multiple times per day. Frequent exposure to loud noises such as firearms, sirens, flash bangs, explosives, ear radio communications, and varying volumes of crowd noise. Frequent exposure to electrical wiring, batteries, vehicles, tasers, and electrical equipment in residential and commercial areas. Exposed to daily vibration from all vehicles. Will be frequently exposed to fumes from gasoline, exhaust, decomposing bodies, narcotics, lead, glass particles, acids/bases, fire, smoke, gunpowder, carbon monoxide, natural gas, and propane. There is a possibility of occasional exposure to other hazardous and flammable chemicals, such as tear gas. Occasionally required to enter confined spaces for 1 to 10 minutes, depending on circumstances. Daily work in traffic is necessary. Will encounter blood-borne pathogens, vehicle collisions, violent subjects, and other factors related to unpredictable situations.
Physical Factors:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will lifts items weighing between 2 and 75 pounds daily and lift items weighing over 20 pounds several times a year, with some of this lifting being done above the head; reach for objects above below shoulders and knees; will work daily at heights of and climb through stairs, ladders, balconies, walls, roofs, bleachers, attics, and rafters; will push and pull objects between 1 and 300 pounds multiples times per day; frequent time spent walking but will vary by day; remain standing infrequently per day; will be required to run in emergencies and pursuits; and remain sitting for extended periods of time sitting in varying locations; will spend 3 to 8 hours per day on repetitive motion tasks. Employee will be required to frequently bend over, kneel, and stoop at various degrees for up to 30 minutes. The ability to grasp pens, pencils, firearms, people, all issued police equipment, and weights between 1 ounce and several hundred pounds is necessary. Ability to distinguish between colors is necessary, 20/20 vision, or correctable to, necessary. The ability to operate a motor vehicle in Colorado for frequent travel while on patrol is necessary.

JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction, the Campus PoliceOfficer's primary role is to prevent crime and the breach of public order. CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Patrol the Institution on foot / vehicle and answer calls to protect personnel, property and various facilities independently or with another to ensure overall Institutional safety;
* Enforce laws, traffic regulations, restraining orders and safety regulations, escort people off campus (i.e., restraining orders, dismissed personnel, disruptive students…etc.) and apprehend / arrest violators;
* Provide security for large gatherings such as campus activities, scholarship gala, graduation and the like;
* Investigate and record irregularities which occur during assigned shifts and take necessary action within limits or prescribed policies and procedures to correct the situation. Respond to and investigate threats; respond to traffic accidents and document the accident within a detailed report; complete work requisitions to maintenance, in order to fix and repair physical plant defects and safety hazards across the Institution;

* Gather, process, and maintain integrity of evidence and interview witnesses;

Successful candidate must possess efficient and effective verbal and written communication skills, multi-task and problem solve to properly support and promote the mission of LECOM.
