Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, payable over an 18-month period. The classification of Correctional Officer 1 currently has an approved starting salary of $4,267.00 per month, or $51,204.00 per year.

During their careers, most correctional security employees can expect to be assigned to any one of three different work shifts and any number of different post assignments. While employee work preferences are considered, there is no guarantee that the employee will remain assigned to any specific shift and/or post assignment.
Overview
The Correctional Officer 1 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required. This is the entry working class in the Correctional Officer sub-series. An employee in this class performs correctional work at a state penal institution involving the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates, and may be assigned to work any shift. This class differs from that of Correctional Corporal in that an incumbent of the latter acts as a minor supervisor.
*An applicant appointed to this class will be reclassified to the Correctional Officer 2* after successful completion of a mandatory one-year training period; inadequate or marginal performance during the training period will result in automatic demotion or termination.
Responsibilities
1. Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attends to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of the inmates.
2. Inspects and patrols the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
3. Checks in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
4. Observes inmate behavior; counsels with inmates and family about problems; evaluates inmates on room and personal hygiene, attitudes towards employees and other inmates, and sends this evaluation to the counseling department.
5. Attends a variety of meetings such as staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
6. Prepares a variety of reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, records of inmates' jobs and pay, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
7. Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment including two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and may operate motor vehicles.
8. Ensures the safety of residents through the supervision of their daily activity.
9. Breaks up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or the use of physical force.
10. Carries out and explains existing policies and procedures to others.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Under direction, patrols assigned areas, conducts criminal investigations, regulates traffic laws, and performs duties of Deputy Sheriff 3.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patrols assigned areas of Anderson County in marked patrol car, keeps the peace, enforces laws, makes arrests, and issues citations. Conducts criminal investigations, serves and makes return of court paperwork (i.e.., subpoenas, warrants, summonses, writs, etc.), compiles information on suspects, and interrogates suspects. Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action. When directed, exercises full supervisory authority as Officer in Charge of shift or specific work assignment. Completes and submits all required reports accurately and in a timely manner. Transports prisoners and provides security to courts. Enforces traffic laws, investigates vehicular collisions, and prepares detailed reports. Assists in rescue activities for sick, injured, or lost persons. Preserves evidence.
Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action while being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
Maintains normal availability by police radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.
Carries out duties in conformance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift. Seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develops leads and tips. Searches scene of crime for clues. Evaluates items for evidentiary value. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.
Prepares a variety of reports and records including deputy's weekly log, reports of investigations, field interrogation report, breathalyzer check list, vehicle impoundment forms, etc.
Coordinates activities with other officers and exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies.
Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provides mutual assistance during emergency situations, and provides general information about Sheriff's Department activities.
Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and bondable.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be a high school graduate or its equivalent for Classified Employees
Must not have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving "moral turpitude" as the term is defined by law and not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
Must have a valid Tennessee Driver's License (only for those employees normally required to operate motor vehicles).

The Position:
The purpose of the Public Safety Officer position is to perform activities related to law enforcement, firefighting, security, and emergency medical services for all Airport Authority owned property, facilities, and users. The Ideal Candidate:

As a department, Campus police are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Hardin Valley Campus, and answer the emergency calls to ************ at any hour.

Essential Functions:
30% Patrols college grounds and adjacent areas on foot and in motor vehicle to deter crime. Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the college.
Essential Functions:
30% Patrols college grounds and adjacent areas on foot and in motor vehicle to deter crime. Enforce Tennessee State Laws and policies and guidelines set by Pellissippi State Community College, the Tennessee Board of Regents, and the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Act. * Conducts investigations of crimes or incidents committed or occurring on campus; seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects; develops leads and tips; searches crime scenes; analyzes and evaluates evidence; arrests offenders; prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court and disciplinary proceedings.
* Assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors as needed and otherwise protects and serves. Assists with emergency planning for the campuses. Participates in emergency management and safety training and coordination. Conducts safety equipment checks as assigned. Maintains Tennessee P.O.ST certification by attending training as necessary. Attends additional training as required and needed for the college and department.
* Develops and maintains a positive and professional rapport with local emergency response agencies representing the college and department in a professional manner.
* Prepares and maintains various reports and records as required.
* May perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
Required Qualifications:
* High school diploma.
* Must be currently Tennessee P.O.S.T certified or left a full time Tennessee P.O.S.T certified
employment within the last three years and certification status must be in good standing
(Note: If P.O.S.T is not current then a physical and psychological examination is required
upon acceptance).
* Must meet or exceed the minimum standard requirements as per TCA 38-8-106.
* Official background check is required prior to a job offer being made.
* Knowledge of campus policies and campus jurisdictional areas.
* Knowledge of city, county, and state laws and court proceedings.
* Knowledge of effective methods of investigation and police/security work.
* Ability to operate law-enforcement equipment.
* Ability to meet institutional and local area requirements related to arrest authority and weapons use.
* Possess a basic knowledge of computer equipment and Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
* Associate's degree or higher in Criminal Justice Technology or related field.
* At least two years of law enforcement experience.

Environment & Working Conditions: Work is completed in a variety of different settings including indoor and outdoor. Incumbent is regularly exposed to different weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, wind, etc. Some work is completed in a temperature-controlled office setting with good lighting.
Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):
* Requires frequent and significant movement by foot and patrol car.
* Requires use of hands, eye, and finger coordination, must be able to handle and operate various types of police equipment to include firearms, Taser, handcuffs, baton, operation of communication equipment and/or other job tools.
* Must be able to complete required training, including mandatory annual P.O.S.T training.
* Must be able to wear a ballistic vest
