**GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:**
This position is responsible for performing a variety of complex law enforcement duties. Enforces Federal and State laws and County ordinances for the protection of life, health, safety, welfare and property. This position works under the general supervision of a Sergeant. A Deputy Sheriff may function as an acting supervisor when assigned to do so or in the absence of higher authority.

**WORK ENVIRONMENT:**
Work is performed in circumstances involving hazards such as crimes, accidents, fires and disturbances which may be threatening to life or cause bodily harm. Run an obstacle course which begins by sitting in the driver's seat of a car, exiting the car and running 175 feet to an 8-foot ladder and ascend/descend five steps or rungs, then run 50 feet to and crawl for 12 feet and return, running 50 feet to the sitting position in the driver's seat of the car within 101 seconds.
Within two minutes of completing the obstacle course, the participant will pull a weighted object (150 pounds) for 25 feet from a standing position.
Immediately after the weight pull, the participant will run a distance of ¼ mile within 162 seconds.

Environmental Factors: Work is performed outside and in a patrol car, as well as in a standard office environment. Exposure to extreme temperatures and frequent time spent in outdoor environments varies depending on assignment. Frequent to constant use of a personal computer. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, and working to deadlines. Employees will be required to walk on uneven surfaces, wet areas, and outdoor terrain multiple times per day. Frequent exposure to loud noises such as firearms, sirens, flash bangs, explosives, ear radio communications, and varying volumes of crowd noise. Frequent exposure to electrical wiring, batteries, vehicles, tasers, and electrical equipment in residential and commercial areas. Exposed to daily vibration from all vehicles. Will be frequently exposed to fumes from gasoline, exhaust, decomposing bodies, narcotics, lead, glass particles, acids/bases, fire, smoke, gunpowder, carbon monoxide, natural gas, and propane. There is a possibility of occasional exposure to other hazardous and flammable chemicals, such as tear gas. Occasionally required to enter confined spaces for 1 to 10 minutes, depending on circumstances. Daily work in traffic is necessary. Will encounter blood-borne pathogens, vehicle collisions, violent subjects, and other factors related to unpredictable situations.
Physical Factors: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will lifts items weighing between 2 and 75 pounds daily and lift items weighing over 20 pounds several times a year, with some of this lifting being done above the head; reach for objects above below shoulders and knees; will work daily at heights of and climb through stairs, ladders, balconies, walls, roofs, bleachers, attics, and rafters; will push and pull objects between 1 and 300 pounds multiples times per day; frequent time spent walking but will vary by day; remain standing infrequently per day; will be required to run in emergencies and pursuits; and remain sitting for extended periods of time sitting in varying locations; will spend 3 to 8 hours per day on repetitive motion tasks. Employee will be required to frequently bend over, kneel, and stoop at various degrees for up to 30 minutes. The ability to grasp pens, pencils, firearms, people, all issued police equipment, and weights between 1 ounce and several hundred pounds is necessary. Qualifying lateral entry applicants will be hired at the PoliceOfficer 1

class salary. To qualify as a lateral entry officer, you must meet the current hiring standards listed below:
Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification or other state equivalent.
Currently employed full time as a policeofficer by state, county or municipal police or sheriff's department.
Applicants who are retired or separated because of a layoff must apply within 20 months of separation, must have been in good standing at the time of retirement or layoff and must possess a current P.O.S.T. certification or other state equivalent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patrols assigned areas within the city to deter illegal activities and protect and preserve the safety and security of individuals, buildings and neighborhoods.
Maintains a high level of customer service and responds rapidly to changing conditions.
Responds to calls for service. Investigates citizen complaints including crime in progress, crimes discovered after the fact, disturbances, domestic disputes, accidents and requests for information or assistance.
Performs preliminary investigations and interviews at crime scenes, traffic accidents, domestic disputes, and disturbances.
Assesses customer and community needs, wants and perceptions.
Collects and preserves physical evidence, recovered property, and diagrams. Photographs scenes and obtains other information from suspects and witnesses necessary to document specific crimes and incidents.
Builds and uses a variety of conflict management skills for different situations and contexts.
Performs traffic enforcement activities to observe and apprehend violators of ordinances and statutes.
Prepares citations and summons necessary to charge individuals with violations of ordinances, statutes, and laws including petty, misdemeanor, and felonious offenses.

The common channel of advancement for PoliceOfficers is from fifth to first class depending on experience, length of employment, training completed and adequate performance of the job. The basic functions are similar for all classes of Officers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education/College Requirements/Military Experience
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
Completion of sixty (60) semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution is required.
Applicants who do not possess sixty (60) semester hours at the time of appointment shall be required to obtain the required credit within one (1) year of appointment as a condition of continued employment.
A minimum of four (4) years of active military service with an Honorable Discharge may be accepted in lieu of the college credit requirement.

**Police Operations - Patrol**
+ Promote public safety by preventing, detecting, and identifying criminal and suspicious activity, issuing summonses, making probable cause arrests and/or incarcerating offenders

**Special Event and Contract Assignments**

**Evidence Recognition, Preservation, Collection, and Submission**
+ Collect and preserve evidence by photographing, videotaping, and sketching crime scenes, collecting fluid specimens, hair and fiber samples, fingerprints, and other items of evidentiary value, while maintaining chain of custody requirements.
**Interviewing and Interrogating**
+ Obtain accurate accounts of incidents by conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, complainants, and obtaining statements from suspects by conducting lawful and appropriate interrogations.
**Proficiencies and Liability Reductions**
+ Limit person agency and institutional legal liability by obtaining certified peace officer status through the State of Colorado and the city of Boulder
+ Maintain strict proficiency in knowledge of laws, use of computer-based resources, crime scene processing methods, arrest control techniques, non-lethal weapons methods, and firearms skills through regular training sessions.

*Both an online City of Englewood Application and a National Testing Network (NTN) Written Exam must be completed prior to being considered for employment with the Englewood Police Department.
