Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.

The Ottawa Police Department is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of PoliceOfficer who are committed to a long career with our department. The men and women of the Department are guided by the following values: To Protect and Serve with Duty, Honor, Integrity, Trust.
With an authorized strength of 30 officers serving a growing population of nearly 13,000 there is room for advancement. Positions include Detective, Drug Detective, DARE Instructor, School Resource Officer (SRO), Master PoliceOfficer, STAR Team (Special Tactics and Rescue), K9 Handler and Community PoliceOfficer. All specialty positions include a take-home vehicle.
The pay range for Master PoliceOfficer is $29.03 to $40.64. Officers are eligible to achieve the rank of Master PoliceOfficer based on a combination of skill points and years of service in about 3 years.
To accomplish our goals the latest technology and police practices are used. The Department operates a modern weapons range as part of a comprehensive training program. The range has a rifle range up to 150 yards and is equipped for night shooting, moving targets, 25-foot platform tower and steel range. Each officer qualifies with the standard issue Glock 17 Gen. 5 handgun, AR-15 rifle (in each car), 37MM Less-Lethal munitions, Taser, and Bola Wrap. Handgun optics issued beginning in 2026.
The department uses a combination of mobile LPR (in all patrol units), fixed Flock LPR cameras and several technology programs to help detect and identify criminal activity. The department has a mix of all manufacturers for patrol vehicles, armored rescue vehicle, special response vehicle, UTV, uAUS, and fleet of police bicycles used for special events.
The Department has a fitness room in the Law Enforcement Center equipped with free weights, functional fitness equipment, cardio machines, and mat area. Patrol schedule includes 12-hour shifts and two weekends off each month (4-day and 3-day). Officers are issued all equipment, including boots. Beards, goatees, mustaches, and tattoos are allowed.
Professional Development Program: Certified officers with road patrol experience will be awarded service credit for years completed service at the discretion of the Police Chief. The Professional Development Program allows officers to advance their careers through a combination of specified training and certifications plus tenure. Officers can achieve the rank of Master PoliceOfficer with about three years of experience and training.
Lateral Transfer: Lateral transfers may be exempt from physical agility testing if the employing agency has a similar agility standard in place, discretion is up to the Police Chief.
Minimum Qualifications: Employees must be a Kansas resident upon hire, 21 years of age at time of appointment and a U.S. citizen, possess a valid Kansas driver's license upon appointment, and be insurable by the city's insurance carrier; high school diploma or GED is required, college credit preferred. Applicants must establish and maintain residency within Franklin County or within a driving distance of 35 miles of the Ottawa City Hall, AND within the state of Kansas within one year of hire. Applicants must successfully complete the following: written entrance exam, physical agility testing, and oral panel interview. Candidates recommended for hire will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, polygraph, psychological, and physical exams. Candidates must meet licensing requirements set by KSCPOST and the Kansas Training Act.

DEPUTY SHERIFF

Position Summary:
Supervises and maintains discipline and control of resident's at all times. Performs searches of resident's person and physical areas in order to prevent and control secretion or contraband. Corrections Officer I (A)s are evaluated on their ability to observe and recall inmate behavior, surroundings and events; write clear and complete sentences; respond to emergencies quickly, climb stairs and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting residents; remain alert over long periods of time; remain calm during stressful situations; and interact with residents and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The incumbent must be capable of preforming Essential Physical Functions. An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:

Safeguards the university against hazards, safety problems, and property damage. Ensure appropriate illumination of buildings to include exits and stairwell lights. Inspect buildings with an eye toward utility conservation. Takes prompt action to eliminate immediate danger to life or property.
Responds, usually on foot, immediately to emergency situations. Assist in building evacuations, when needed. Assist in perimeter control, when necessary, which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions. Reports life threatening conditions and/or property loss/damage to proper authorities. Provide assistance in accordance with training and common sense and/or stands by until help arrives.
Must work cooperatively with others providing a courteous, complete and efficient service. Must maintain proper care and control of department equipment and vehicles. Applicant must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record. Applicant must be capable of receiving certification from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center for a full-time law enforcement officer in the State of Kansas. All applicants must be a U.S. citizen, 21 years or older, at the time of appointment and have the ability to pass a work-related physical proficiency/agility test, a medical/physical examination, a psychological examination and a background investigation. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony, must not have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. armed forces or a background that would be disrespectful to the profession of law enforcement or the citizens of Pottawatomie County Kansas. Employees must successfully complete a 6-month probationary training and assessment period from the date of employment.
Personal Relations:
Incumbent works daily with sworn and non-sworn employees and supervisory officers in order to fulfill job responsibilities and department objectives. Also, may interact on a daily basis with other county agencies, outside law enforcement agencies and the general public. Incumbent exchanges routine factual information daily through one-on-one contact, by telephone, radio and by correspondence. Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisory personnel is expected.
