Application and Testing Process
Under the direct supervision of a Police Lieutenant and Sergeant, with general supervision by the Chief of Police, the employee's behavior is governed by policies and procedures of the Police Department; local, state, and federal laws; and court decisions.
This is a responsible human relations and skilled position in public safety. The employee in this position is responsible for the protection of the public's safety, the prevention of crime, and the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
The employee exercises considerable discretion in regulating daily activity and use of enforcement powers.
Work includes patrolling the community by vehicle and on foot. Bicycle and marine patrol duties are assigned upon qualification. The employee responds to calls for service, which include reports of criminal activity, traffic safety, crime prevention, and general public safety problems.
The employee conducts preliminary and continued investigations for reported crimes and traffic accidents. This responsibility includes crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and victims, and enforcing specific violations of the law.
The employee performs several assignments to prevent crime and traffic accidents. These assignments are educational and inspectional: presentations on prevention techniques; conducting security surveys; security checks on home and businesses; inspection of business practices and policies; and inspection of building construction for compliance with the security ordinance.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interact with and serve the Nooksack Community in a professional, patient, and compassionate manner.
Investigate and monitor sex offenders.
Educate Officers and community members about the issue of and related to sexual assaults and sex offenders, such as what it is, how to identify signs of sex abuse and assault, how to respond appropriately to ensure victims' safety, options for reporting, and how to prevent sex crimes.
Coordinate with other SORNA Officer(s) to ensure Sex Offender Website is up to date.

Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service.

Interact effectively and professionally with other Tribal Police Department staff and employees of other Nooksack Tribal Departments and outside agencies.
Patrol areas of the reservation in a police patrol vehicle and on foot to deter and discover crime.
Responds to and investigates crimes. Protects the public, gathers and preserves evidence, and takes statements concerning crimes occurring on the Nooksack Reservation and Trust land.
Interviews persons with complaints and makes proper disposition or directs them to the proper authorities.
Practice officer safety skills to ensure the safety of self and others. Handcuff and search arrested persons and secure their custody. Transports arrested persons to court, jail, hospital, and convicted persons to institutions out of the county and out of state as necessary.
Accurately complete necessary reports concerning crimes, circumstances of arrest, gathering of evidence, and personal information of witnesses and victims.
Follows up on cases resulting in offender apprehension and property recovery.
Coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, photographing, and overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence. Maintains the chain of evidence by properly marking, tagging, and storing in accordance with established rules of evidence and department procedures.
Assist citizens by giving information on laws, ordinances, and directions to other authorities or agencies when appropriate. Aid persons who are injured or in distress. Assist other Tribal departments to fulfill their responsibilities by sharing non-confidential information and taking enforcement actions as necessary.
Investigate family disputes and reports of maltreatment of children, takes suspects into custody as needed, and or refer them to the appropriate authorities.
Gather and preserve evidence; ensure evidence is properly maintained for use in court. Testify in court concerning their observations, decisions, actions, arrests, and child placements.
All other necessary law enforcement or emergency service duties as assigned by department supervisors.

TESTING PROCESS:
Those individuals who have passed both the written and physical agility tests will have their information forwarded to the City of Renton by Public Safety Testing. A 70% on the written exam is required to move forward in the process. An oral board interview may be scheduled for the top candidates. Candidates must obtain an 70% passing score in the oral board to be placed on the Eligibility List. (Candidates that do not pass the oral board are eligible to re-test 90 days from the previous oral board date.) A combined (interview weighted at 70% and the written test weighted at 30%) minimum score of 70% is required for placement on the eligibility list. This position provides first line duty in the protection of life and property of the citizens of the community including the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the preservation of the peace, apprehension of criminals, control of non-criminal conduct and the application of services to the community. Selection is based upon civil service rules. Testing for lateral candidates include a physical agility test and oral interview. Incumbents must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen, possess a valid driver's license, possess a current basic law enforcement qualification certification issued by the state in which he/she attended the basic law enforcement academy; possess a current State Department of L&I Basic First Aid Card or ability to obtain within 90 days, and be certified by the Washington State Toxicologist in operation of the breathalyzer or ability to obtain within 90 days.

The Public Safety Civil Service Exams Unit oversees the initial exam process, establishes an eligible list, and certifies candidates from the eligible list upon request by the Seattle Police Department. The Police Department will directly contact and schedule eligible candidates for allthe remaining steps in the pre-employment screening process. The Seattle Police Department makes all hiring decisions after a pre-employment selection process, which includes a background investigation, additional interviews, a physical ability exam, a polygraph, and psychological and medical exams.
