Key Responsibilities

The Engineering team discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements, or strategic product extensions, and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products. This role in summary
Work as part of a team to complete kaizen projects to attack losses in the plant. The successful candidate will work within the Marion Materials department as the person responsible for a specific area of the plant. He or she will also create purchase orders for components and schedule/track/audit the work. Some weekend work may be necessary.
Your responsibilities will include
* Support production day to day to achieve plant metrics in safety, quality, cost, and delivery using various systems such as Leansuite, Lodestar and Gensuite
* Drive Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Engagement throughout the entire plant
* Develop creative solutions and possibly lead capital projects that support the long term strategy of the Marion operation.
* Focus on rack management and rack design with new product integration
* Understand and lead route maximization through data analysis
* Lead World Class Manufacturing (WCM) expansion activities through Logistics Customer Service (LCS) Pillar
* Lead continuous improvement activities utilizing the WCM methodology in support of plant metrics. The person in this role will support our WCM implementation with specific targets to meet.
* Perform root cause analysis based on data to eliminate losses.
* Data collection and analysis will play a big part of your job. Once losses are identified a countermeasure in the form of a kaizen will be implemented against the root cause issue.
* You will manage the kaizen from start to finish through the various internal tollgates. Support operations in the form of coming up with creative solutions to immediate problems.
* Lead/work in small cross functional teams.

Job Description
We have an opening for a Materials Physics Academic Graduate Appointee to help develop systems to induce high dynamic pressures and improve the models used in hydrocode simulations. This position is in the Equation of State - Capability Development and Applications Group in the Physics Division.
Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.
You will
Work as a member of multidisciplinary teams, designing and interpreting experiments involving dynamic compression of matter to high pressures;
Perform hydrocode simulations of the experiments and their applications;
Contribute to the development of improved models used in the simulations, including of the equation of state and strength of component materials, shock-induced exothermic reactions, and the transport and deposition of laser energy;
Analyze results and prepare technical reports and presentations as appropriate;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering or similar numerate subject.
Experience in performing multidimensional hydrocode simulations of impacts, detonation, and laser heating/ablation to be able to work effectively with infrequent supervision.
Knowledge of fluid mechanics, continuum mechanics, shock physics, and thermodynamics.
Knowledge of materials science and the properties of crystalline materials at elevated pressure, e.g. phase transitions.
Practical knowledge of numerical methods for solving the hydrodynamic equations for applications involving shocks and their reflections, sufficient to be able to avoid common pitfalls.
Experience participating in experimental science, interacting with experimental teams, and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts and proposals.
Computer literacy, including office applications, data processing/programming, and preparation of graphs and technical materials.
Qualifications We Desire
Knowledge of hydrodynamics, shock physics, reactive flow, and radiation transport.
Knowledge of quantum mechanics and its application to the electronic structure of matter.
Knowledge or experience relevant to drives and diagnostics for dynamic loading systems, e.g. HE detonation, radiation transport, high-power pulsed laser systems, x-ray diffraction, laser interferometry, radiography.
Knowledge or experience of design engineering, i.e. optimizing a system to achieve a desired performance.

Who You Are

Under the direction of the Materials Manager, assists with the following materials supervisor responsibilities:
* Provides supervision to hourly and salary employees on assigned shift.

* Report all accidents / near misses to the operations manager and safety manager within 24 hours. Participate in the completion of the accident investigation / report.

* Acquire an understanding of manufacturing principals to drive ERP improvements.
* Ensures materials are stored properly to conserve space, 5s and comply with FIFO and Safety Procedures.

Education and Training

POSITION SPECIFICS
We are seeking scientists and engineers to join the Polymer Composite Manufacturing Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. As part of a technical team engaged in engineering and technology needs you will support the research and development of new materials, innovative material system designs, and novel fabrication and testing methods. This will cover a wide range of material systems including composites (fiber-reinforced polymers, ceramic matrix composites, metal matrix composites), elastomers, additively manufactured polymers, and ceramics as well as emergent technologies.
The Polymer Composites Fabrication Department focuses on creating the development and optimization of materials processes for research, prototype development, and transition to implementation. The advanced inspection technologies and application of operational health monitoring represents a vital capability to achieve and maintain our historical implementations.
These positions can be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

**The team you will be a part of**
The Engineering team discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements, or strategic product extensions, and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products. Leads, plans and tracks all phases of the product life cycle, from inception to introduction into the marketplace. Coordinates with various functions to ensure successful product development and implementation.
**This role in summary**
Work as part of a team to complete kaizen projects to attack losses in the plant. The successful candidate will work within the Marion Materials department as the person responsible for a specific area of the plant. The successful candidate will interact with internal customers as well as outside vendors to support kaizen work. He or she will also create purchase orders for components and schedule/track/audit the work. Some weekend work may be necessary.
**Your responsibilities will include**
+ Support production day to day to achieve plant metrics in safety, quality, cost, and delivery using various systems such as Leansuite, Lodestar and Gensuite
+ Drive Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Engagement throughout the entire plant
+ Develop creative solutions and possibly lead capital projects that support the long term strategy of the Marion operation.
+ Focus on rack management and rack design with new product integration
+ Understand and lead route maximization through data analysis
+ Lead World Class Manufacturing (WCM) expansion activities through Logistics Customer Service (LCS) Pillar
+ Lead continuous improvement activities utilizing the WCM methodology in support of plant metrics. The person in this role will support our WCM implementation with specific targets to meet.
+ Perform root cause analysis based on data to eliminate losses.
+ Data collection and analysis will play a big part of your job. Once losses are identified a countermeasure in the form of a kaizen will be implemented against the root cause issue.
+ You will manage the kaizen from start to finish through the various internal tollgates. Support operations in the form of coming up with creative solutions to immediate problems.
+ Lead/work in small cross functional teams.
+ Develop solutions and lead capital projects that support the long term manufacturing strategy of the Marion operation.
+ Specify, order and assure proper implementation of new process & equipment
+ Maintain quality standards within the department
+ Communicate to work teams, shop floor leaders, and other departments to ensure greatest efficiency
+ Support maintenance department in troubleshooting critical issues
+ Drive process improvements using lean manufacturing concepts and tools
+ Demonstrated capability in leading and managing large scale projects, installations, working closely with vendors, project teams, etc.
+ Lead team of Engineering Technician(s) to drive projects
**Minimum requirements**
+ Bachelor's Degree
+ 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
**Preferred skills and experiences**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Materials Management
+ Presentation and facilitation skills
+ Experience in a manufacturing environment with a good understanding of plant operations
+ Possess good judgment, planning and analytical skills with the ability to introduce new and different concepts into an existing organization.
+ Experience collaborating across departments
+ Well-developed communication, conflict management, coaching, interpersonal, and team building skills
+ Solid decision-making and judgment skills
+ Resourcefulness in accomplishing objectives and completing tasks
+ Proven problem-solving skills
