Job Summary
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services is actively looking for qualified individuals to fill full-time Lifeguard roles. The Recreation Center boasts a competition pool alongside a leisure pool that includes a water slide, a children's play area, and a hot tub. This role will involve maintaining records and facilitating the orientation of new aquatics staff. An ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, patience, and effective communication abilities.
We are currently hiring for the following location(s):

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Carries out daily custodial and maintenance functions to ensure the aquatic facility remains safe and clean, rearranges the pool for specific activities and events, and assists in the execution of special events.
* Ensure compliance with and enforce the regulations and rules governing the pool.
* Assists with clerical duties, including utilizing scheduling software, and maintains required aquatic facility records.
* Provide excellent customer service.
* Aids distressed individuals by utilizing rescue techniques and equipment; alerts emergency medical personnel in cases of significant injury; offers emergency care and treatment as required.
* It is possible that other essential duties related to the position and department may be performed as required.
This position is eligible for a $3,000.00 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.
* The work schedule offers flexibility and will necessitate early morning, evening, and weekend availability.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
Preferred Qualifications:
* A minimum of one year of supervisory experience is preferred.
* Lifeguarding Instructor, AED, and Supplemental Oxygen preferred.
* Water Safety Instructor and Membership in the Virginia Recreation and Park Society and the National Recreation and Parks Association.
* One (1) year of aquatic experience, including aquatics programming and pool facility management, working with the public, groups, and organizations.

PoolOperators are Lifeguard-certified staff who also hold a Fairfax County-approved PoolOperator license and serve as the day-to-day supervisors when pool management is not present. In addition to performing lifeguard duties, PoolOperators are responsible for supervising daily facility operations, delegating tasks to staff, providing training and oversight, and ensuring compliance with health and safety codes. This includes testing and adjusting water chemistry, monitoring sanitizer and pH levels, bather load, water balance, flowrate/turnover requirements, and maintaining accurate documentation.
Additional key responsibilities include maintaining a hazard-free environment, enforcing facility policies fairly and consistently, and participating in regular practice of rescue skills and safety knowledge. Operators provide effective surveillance and back-up coverage in rotation, assist with facility admissions and retail sales (at select locations), offer information to guests, perform routine cleaning, complete reports and forms, and assist with equipment. In emergency situations, operators provide care in accordance with their training and certifications.
Candidates must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and Fairfax County-approved PoolOperator License (provided upon hire) and are expected to consistently demonstrate the skills outlined in their certification, adhere to all standards and protocols associated with it, and maintain its validity through ongoing compliance and renewal as required.
This position offers 10-40 hours per week, from May - August, with evening and weekend shifts required to support department operations and special events. These hours depend on operational needs and are subject to change.

Position Overview
The Lifeguard plays a key role in promoting safety and positive experiences at City of Alexandria pools. Lifeguards monitor swimmers, enforce rules, and respond to emergencies, creating a welcoming environment for swimmers of all ages. The Opportunity
Lifeguards are assigned to indoor and outdoor pool facilities throughout the City. Shifts are available during mornings, daytime, evenings, and weekends. Positions are available for summer or year-round. In this position, you'll work as part of a supportive team to:
* Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in and around the pool.
* Prevent and respond to emergencies, including water rescues and first aid.
* Communicate clearly and respectfully with the public and fellow staff.
* Assist with pool setup, cleanliness, and daily operations.

* Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
* Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
* Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
* Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
* Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
* Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
* Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
* CPR/AED first aid training certification
* Lifeguard or similar water rescue certification
Preferred Qualifications
* Must be at least 15 years of age by the start of employment.

Description of Job Duties
Protect the safety and well being of each patron using the SUWC aquatic facility. The lifeguard will provide friendly, professional, and safe assistance to all aquatic users. Supervise the activities of swimmers by enforcing rules and regulations. Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards. Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning and provide rescue breathing, CPR and First Aid. Notify the Aquatic Coordinator of any accidents, rescues, or other pertinent information. Successfully and positively perform within work team dynamics. Attend scheduled in-service training. Maintain attendance and activity record and complete required reports. Assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas and facilities.
