Portage Public Schools company history timeline

1922

The Portage School district started in 1922 with five teachers.

1963

Vance said he obviously could not interview the late Cleora Skinner, but she did an interview in 1963 that talks about some of the challenges of not only being the first superintendent but a woman in a time when her gender was seldom in leadership roles.

1997

In 1997, the Collins family offered the “right of first refusal” to the Library Board to purchase their home adjacent to the Library.

2000

2000 establishing the Free Public Library and Reading Room.

2004

Vance did most of the interviews in 2004 as part of his master's degree program in United States history at Western Michigan University.

2008

In 2008, the Bidwell Foundation, a major donor in the funding of the existing building, approached the Library Board and expressed interest in contributing to an expansion.

2013

In 2013, the now 24,500 square foot library added a separate children's library, three study rooms, a reading room for adults, and a much expanded teen space and program room.

2017
