She died in 1969, the year before the original nursing home opened, and left Porter a substantial bequest in her will.
Middlebury was without an emergency medical response service until 1970, when a group of passionate community members, led by George "Wedge" Murdoch, took action.
MREMS is headquartered out of a state-of-the-art Emergency Medical Services station, dedicated in 2010 after decades of organizational savings and donations from generous community members, civic organizations, businesses, and Middlebury College.
