Portland Public Schools company history timeline

1858

A year later, the district built what came to be called Central School, which opened its doors on the block now occupied by Pioneer Courthouse Square on May 7, 1858.

1885

At last, in September of 1885, the new Portland High School opened its doors at Southwest 14th Avenue and Morrison Street - roughly the current location of the Tiffany Center.

1893

The log structure was replaced by a simple wooden building, which was torn down in 1893 when a more substantial elementary school was built.

1915

Shattuck Hall on the PSU campus, built as Shattuck School in 1915, was among the city's first built under the "fireproof" law.

1929

In 1929, this school moved across the river to the current Cleveland High School site.

The school’s name lengthened to Clinton Kelly High School of Commerce, and in 1929 the cornerstone was laid for a new, much larger building and the former elementary school was torn down.

1934

The class of 1934 poses at the end of the school year in front of the old Woodmere building.

1938

By 1938, there were 12,537 students attending 41 public schools, and $4.5 million invested in school buildings.

1950

In the late 1950’s the building was enlarged to include the East Wing and the new gym.

1954

In 1954 the new primary building was opened for grades 1-4.

1958

In 1958 the old building was torn down and the new primary building was expanded to provide for grades 1-8.

1976

A vocational-technical school opened in 1976.
