Position Summary
The Perez Lab in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia is recruiting a highly motivated Assistant Research Scientist to conduct research in the development of novel vaccines. This role presents an opportunity to conduct pioneering research focused on the development of novel recombinant vaccines. The successful candidate will utilize viral reverse genetics platforms, including the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vector, to create effective bivalent recombinant vaccines against a broad spectrum of animal and zoonotic pathogens, such as Avian Influenza Virus, Infectious Bronchitis Virus, and Infectious Bursal Disease Virus. The group's research interests focus on the interspecies transmission, pathogenesis, and control of viruses of public health concern.
The laboratory uses a wide range of in vitro and in vivo approaches to study the host range of viruses and improve existing or develop novel vaccines and antivirals. We have developed several vaccine platforms against influenza viruses, including vaccines to enhance the mucosal immune response. The Assistant Research Scientist will lead the development and evaluation of modified live virus vaccines based on NDV utilizing reverse genetics techniques, design and execute experiments, meticulously analyze collected data, and prepare comprehensive manuscripts and reports for publication in scientific journals. The Assistant Research Scientist will work with an international collaborative group of students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers at the University of Georgia and abroad.
Additional Requirements
Background in pathogenesis, transmission, vaccine, and antivirals evaluation in different animal models such as mice, hamsters, chickens, and ferrets in ABSL2 or ABSL3 settings is required.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
PhD in preventive veterinary science, microbiology, molecular virology, or immunology, with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience. Training and proven track record in mucosal immunology, reverse genetics - specifically of paramyxoviruses -, molecular biology, in vitro transcription, development of vaccine platforms, and antiviral evaluation.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
This position involves knowledge of molecular biological and virology procedures and techniques. Knowledge and demonstrated success with reverse genetics, development of vaccine platforms, antiviral evaluation, and mucosal immunology. Candidates should possess a proven record in reverse genetics, vaccine platform development, antiviral evaluation, and mucosal immunology, with expertise in establishing reverse genetic systems for Paramyxovirus being highly valued. Good organizational skills, including planning animal experiments and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and with others and to supervise and mentor other lab members. Good written and oral communication skills. History of and willingness to collaborate in animal experiments using various animal models.

Primary duties will be to conduct standard roadside grouse surveys, and search for grouse drumming logs to obtain samples for genetic analysis. Technicians will also be responsible for set-up, take-down, and monitoring of Automated Recording Units (ARUs). Technicians will enter data on a daily basis, and may be asked to enter acoustical sound data from the ARUs. Working hours will vary depending on distance to survey points each morning, but expect very early mornings to early/mid-afternoon work schedules. Field housing and a work vehicle will be provided. Primary Duties: 1) Perform bird point count surveys 2) Operate song meters 3) Search for grouse fecal samples 4) Enter data 5) Traveling to field sites.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
A strong work ethic and positive attitude, interest in birds and conservation, and strong observational and listening skills. Working towards or have a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology or related field. A valid driver's license and good driving record.

Ability to navigate using a GPS and Google Maps. Ability to follow directions and work independently. Comfortable navigating off-road locations and have exceptional organizational skills. Job Description

The technician will also have opportunities to collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students.
The position is for field research, conducted at a common garden site in Ithaca, New York. The entire position will be executed out of state during the growing season from May - October 2026.

Duties/Responsibilities
Assists Farm Manager in all aspects of research project support to include crop and cash crop management/production- field prep, planting, pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation, cultivation, harvest, etc. In addition, communicates with research faculty, staff and students to ensure research protocols are met on a regular basis.
Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities
Assists Farm Manager in general upkeep and maintenance of research farm facilities- general maintenance in and around multiple research farm buildings, maintaining wildlife fence, mowing grass, maintaining landscaped areas around buildings, etc.

Assists Farm Manager with upkeep and maintenance of research farm agricultural equipment- tractors, implements, harvesters, etc.

Information Classification Title Post-Doctoral Associate AD FLSA Exempt UGA Job Code FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications The University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Lab is looking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate to assist with the analysis and publication of data on small mammal abundance and ecology as well as the disease ecology of mesopredators in the Southeastern US. Additionally, the successful applicant will utilize modern molecular tools to evaluate questions related to population genetics of wildlife species. The successful candidate will primarily collaborate with existing students and staff on the analyses and publication of existing data on the abundance, diversity, and disease ecology of small mammals, as well as on strategies for the optimization of mesopredator baiting programs for elimination of rabies in the Southeastern US. The successful candidate also will have the opportunity to collect, analyze, and publish molecular data on population genetics questions related to several large sample sets from vertebrate species collected in various locations around the US.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, or a related field. Alternate fields of study may be considered depending on specific experience at it relates to this position. The department is looking for a self-motivated, responsible, creative and enthusiastic individual. The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive experience in a range of statistical approaches and will show evidence of flexible thinking and good organizational skills. Proficiency in programming in R is preferred. The candidate also will have strong written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, conferences presentations and experience in writing applying for external funding (commensurate with experience). Prior experience with the collection and analysis of molecular genetics data is needed.
Applicants must be able to pass a background investigation for employment by UGA and be eligible to obtain a badge to enter the Savannah River Site.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Analytical Skills - Will be capable of using contemporary statistical and modelling methods for the analysis of a variety of data types related to the capture and handling of small mammals and the documentation of bait fate for rabies related research. Additionally, will be capable of analyzing genetic and genomics data collected for the purpose of answering questions pertaining to vertebrate population structure, movement behavior, and conservation.
Molecular Skills -Will be able to collect, interpret, organize, and analyze genetic and genomic data collected from vertebrate species for the purpose of answering questions pertaining to vertebrate population structure, movement behavior, and conservation.
Writing Skills - Will be able to work as the lead author or co-author of publications stemming from unique research conducted by the applicant while employed in this position or as part of a team working to publish the results of graduate student research conducted in the supervisors research program.

This is a multidisciplinary project with enormous training opportunities in stem cell biology, neuroscience and human disease modeling. This project encompasses multiple collaborations across the US. There are various career development opportunities available to the candidate, including a potential biotech start-up co-appointment. The start date is flexible but aimed at summer 2026. The University of Georgia offers a highly collaborative, top-notch training and research environment in biomedical sciences. The Center for Molecular Medicine is striving to become a leader in biomedical research, with a goal to understand the molecular and cellular basis of human disease and use this information for the development of new therapies, cures and diagnostics.
