Our research focuses on how sympathetic nerve signaling remodels the tumor microenvironment to drive cancer progression, with emphasis on prostate and pancreatic cancers. We are particularly interested in the bidirectional communication between tumor-innervating neurons, cancer cells, and immune populations such as mast cells. Our lab integrates spatial proteomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and epigenomics, and advanced 3D ex vivo and in vivo mouse models to dissect neural regulation of cancer. We are specifically seeking candidates with a strong background in ex vivo and in vivo cancer models, including experience in mammalian cell culture, imaging techniques, and a deep interest in uncovering cancer-nerve interactions, whether from a neuroscience or cancer biology perspective. An NSF-funded Research and Training Group (RTG) in Computation- And Data-Enabled Science (CADES) at Portland State University (PSU) will produce unique workforce additions possessing deep knowledge in specific areas of computational mathematics and statistics, as well as a broad understanding of current issues in data-driven science. We are looking for a senior Postdoctoral Scholar to join Dr. Juan Piantino's lab within the Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute, Neuroscience Section. Our research focuses on the biological mechanisms linking sleep disturbances to cognitive function and recovery from brain injury in humans. Specifically, we focus on the glymphatic pathway as a mediator between poor sleep and recovery from concussion in young individuals. Our lab has pioneered the use of non-invasive neuroimaging techniques to assess glymphatic function in humans, in healthy conditions and following traumatic brain injury. We currently have funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense to conduct large longitudinal studies on sleep and concussion in young adults. The person joining the lab will be tasked with analyzing sleep and neuroimaging data and disseminating our findings via publications and presentations at scientific meetings. Our research focuses on how sympathetic nerve signaling remodels the tumor microenvironment to drive cancer progression, with emphasis on prostate and pancreatic cancers. We are particularly interested in the bidirectional communication between tumor-innervating neurons, cancer cells, and immune populations such as mast cells. Our lab integrates spatial proteomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and epigenomics, and advanced 3D ex vivo and in vivo mouse models to dissect neural regulation of cancer. We are specifically seeking candidates with a strong background in ex vivo and in vivo cancer models, including experience in mammalian cell culture, imaging techniques, and a deep interest in uncovering cancer-nerve interactions, whether from a neuroscience or cancer biology perspective. Scientific curiosity and the ability to work across disciplines are essential.
