    The Criscione Lab is seeking an ambitious applicant who is eager to learn and is passionate about applying the scientific method in horticultural studies. This position will support a research and extension program in nursery production at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Virginia Beach, VA. This will be a 36-month, benefits-eligible position. Continuation beyond the 36-month appointment will be based on performance and availability of funds. The prospective candidate will oversee and manage research experiments in the field (nursery and greenhouse production), as well as assist with laboratory-based experiments. The candidate will assist in data archiving and collection, including measuring (1) different aspects of plant growth such as how shoots and roots develop, the shape and structure of the root system, and how the plant functions overall, (2) soilless substrate physical and chemical properties, (3) water analysis, and (4) possible entomology metrics. This position is tailored for applicants with a passion and interest in horticulture, soils, or environmental science, providing the opportunity to strengthen their experience in both research and field work, particularly if graduate school is of interest. Stranding Response Program staff members are often assigned a primary area of responsibility based on candidate experience and skill level, as well as programmatic needs, at the time of hire. Regardless of primary assignment, all members of the Stranding Response Program need to have / develop foundational skills and working knowledge in all areas for rotational coverage and seasonal fluctuations in stranding activities. These areas include: conduct and/or coordinate response to live and dead marine mammals and sea turtles; medical treatment and rehabilitation of sea turtles; live animal care, husbandry and water quality/life support system maintenance; assistance and/or coordination of database entry and quality control of stranding case and sample information; assist or conduct necropsies on sea turtles and marine mammals; daytime and shared overnight hotline coverage and outreach activities; assist with selection, training, and leading part-time staff, volunteers and interns. Deliver presentations for staff and volunteers and/or represent Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program at conferences, symposiums, or other events as requested. Duties include: * Serve as rotating Response Lead during and after hours to answer and field calls from the public regarding stranded animals. Must be able to, along with guidance from senior staff, determine if calls warrant a response, prioritize and organize resources, and coordinate the initial stranding response activities required. Response planning includes the assessment and logistics for both live and dead stranded animal response and recovery for the whole state of Virginia. * Complete proper documentation and data collection for each stranding, including case follow through and record completion. Collect and enter level A, B, and C stranding data for marine mammals and STSSN data for sea turtles. Collect and enter daily feed and treatment records for animals undergoing rehabilitation. Manage overnight hotline an average of 1-2 nights per week. Experience Required Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to two (2) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with positions such as wildlife biologist, zoologist, stranding technician, or necropsy technician in a similar facility or program, (e.g. stranding organization, field conservation station, anatomy or necropsy/pathology laboratory, etc.).     Cryo electron microscopy laboratory (PI Dr. Vitold E. Galkin) is seeking motivated postdoc to conduct research on the mechanisms of cardiac muscle contraction. Dr. Galkin has excellent records of publications in the field of structural biology and pioneered single-particle approach to 3D reconstruction of helical filaments while working with Dr. Edward H. Egelman at UVA. PI has access to two state of the art Titan Krios TEMs equipped with Falcon 3c and K3 summit direct detectors, energy filters and phase plates. The nearest facility at UVA is within 2.5h by car. EVMS has TEM on site to conduct preliminary studies on protein complexes. PI has large park of Linux based work stations with 256-512Gb of memory and 36-48 core processors for high speed computing. SPIDER, EMAN2 and RELION software is used for classification and 3D-reconstruction. Position is offered for 3 years and is funded by the NIH R01 grant. Qualifications Ph.D. degree in structural biology or muscle regulation field is required. Applicant is expected to have at least one first author publication in international peer reviewed journal along with at least one record of participation in international meetings related to structural biology or muscle regulation. Fast learning curve is expected along with the ability to independently summarize data, relate results to the published observations and write scientific papers aimed for peer reviewed journals. An ample training will be provided and PI will be available to discuss progress on a daily basis during the first year.
