1830

Our people started to learn French when Belgium was created, in 1830.

1853

The first Belgian immigrants arrived in Wisconsin in 1853.

1868

William Engeman, an early real estate developer bought land in 1868 and named it Brighton Beach, after a famous British resort.

In 1951 Jerry Bernstein opened a kosher butcher shop called J&J Poultry.

1952

By 1952, specially bred meat chickens (“broilers”) surpassed farm chickens as the number one source of chicken meat in the United States.

1959

Federal inspection of broilers became mandatory in 1959.

1961

For years it operated as a stand-alone shop in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn, NY. Around 1961 the popularity of the store had grown so much that the two decided to start delivering meat to other butcher shops and markets.

1977

Then in 1977 Porky moved to a larger warehouse in the Brooklyn Meat Market.

1980

Chicken had already surpassed pork consumption in 1985.

1986

In 1991, the United States government helped sponsor the first shipments of frozen poultry leg quarters to the Soviet Union.

Chicken consumption surpassed beef consumption in the United States in 1992.

1993

In 1993 they acquired trading and brokerage firm Protimex based out of Los Angeles, CA. That business continues to grow, adding members and offices around the country that trade meat on both a domestic and international scale.

1998

On January 26, 1998, USDA required the HAACP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) process control system program in all large poultry slaughter establishments.

1999

On January 1, 1999, the National Broiler Council changed its name to the National Chicken Council to better reflect the industry that the organization represents.

2001

By 2001, chicken exports to Russia and other foreign markets accounted for approximately 20 percent of total American production, worth more than $2 billion.
