He helped his father and grandfather build houses.Even though his father encouraged him to be whatever he wanted to be, Monte joined the family business in 1959 and built his own home in Marine Hills.
In 1984, with the University of Missouri’s School of Agriculture as a catalyst and partner, the Powell Family Foundation began developing a horticultural and natural resource facility called Powell Center.
In 1988, official ties with the University of Missouri ended and Powell Gardens Inc., a not-for-profit organization, was established.
By 1997, the garden was ready for its first year of mass plantings: Diane’s favorite Perennial Borders Garden.
Before it was done, the City of Federal Way, the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the state Department of Fisheries had all been consulted and involved.And the work didn’t end in 1999, either.
