Power Creative company history timeline

1979

The story of Silicon Graphics began in 1979, when James Clark, an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University, assembled a team of six graduate students to study the possibilities of computer graphics.

1981

Apollo, one of the real workstation pioneers, started their workstation development in 1981 with the DN100 and later the DN550.

1982

At about the same time in 1982, Sun Microcomputers was founded.

1983

In 1983 the company released its first products: the IRIS (Integrated Raster Imaging System) 1000 graphics terminal and an accompanying software interface known as the IRIS Graphics Library.

1984

The first prototype of SGI’s computer workstation was given free of charge in 1984 to George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars series of movies.

1985

The next year Silicon Graphics released its first workstation, the IRIS 1400, and followed it in 1985 with the IRIS 2400, a workstation with a window manager.

Public Company Incorporated: 1985 as Joe R. Davis, Inc.

With backing from family and investors, Davis formed Consolidated to acquire Western Lithograph Company in 1985.

1987

In 1987 it became the first computer company to make use of MIPS Computer Systems’ innovative reduced instruction-set chip, or RISC, when it incorporated RISC architecture into its new IRIS 4D/60 workstation.

A second acquisition, Grover/Houston Litho, followed in 1987.

1988

Sales increased steeply and consistently, reaching $153 million in 1988.

The first out-of-state buy, Tewell's Printing of Denver, came in 1988.

1989

Apollo was acquired by HP in 1989, and they merged their own Series 9000 workstation line with that of the Apollo systems.

1990

In 1990 sales volume topped $420 million.

Adobe Photoshop—first released in 1990—even on its own changed the face of graphic design.

1991

To recruit and train management talent, CGX started its unique Leadership Development Program in 1991.

1992

In 1992 it purchased MIPS Computer Systems, which designed SGI’s RISC microprocessors.

1994

In June 1994, the company went public, raising about $20 million.

1995

In 1995 Silicon Graphics teamed up with DreamWorks SKG – the entertainment entity formed by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen, and DreamWorks Digital Studio for the creation of animation, feature films, and other products.

In 1995 the first feature-length animated movie to be entirely computer-generated, the Disney Company’s Toy Story, was created with SGI’s computers.

In 1995 it merged with the two leading software companies in its market, Alias Research and Wavefront Technologies.

1996

CGX displayed its buying power in a 1996 order for 210 printing units from Komori America Corp.

1997

In 1997 Silicon Graphics acquired ParaGraph International Inc., a leading vendor of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) for Web graphic tools.

Consolidated bought another ten businesses in 1997 alone.

In the 1997 fiscal year, CGX had 1,417 employees, sales of $144 million, and net income of $10 million.

1998

Richard Belluzzo was brought in from Hewlett-Packard, where he was second in command, to take over as CEO and president, effective January 1, 1998.

Fiscal 1998 (ending June 30) was a poor year for Silicon Graphics due to market conditions, poor operational execution, and missed opportunities.

1999

For the first six months of fiscal 1999 Silicon Graphics posted a net loss of $87 million on revenues of $1.6 billion.

He began stocking shelves with bread at the tender age of six, according to the Houston Business Journal, which reported the store was still standing in 1999.

2000

Revenues were $625 million in fiscal 2000, while net income was $38.5 million.

2002

2004

CGX posted net income of $20 million on sales of $708 million in fiscal 2004.

2008

They reemerged from bankruptcy later that year, but were delisted from NASDAQ in 2008.

2009

2016

Hewlett Packard Enterprise acquired Silicon Graphics International in 2016.
