    Job Function: DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a stationary engineering position involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, generating, ventilating, and refrigerating equipment. At some locations, the work may also involve maintenance and repairs of plumbing and electrical systems. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Chief Engineer - Stationary, Stationary Engineer - First Class, or in the case of Monroe Community College, the Director of Building Maintenance. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of an Assistant Engineer-Stationary III or Assistant Engineer Stationary-Trainee. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed): * Operates, maintains, and repairs heating, generating, ventilating, and refrigerating equipment; * Maintains and repairs auxiliary equipment such as sewage systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, hot water heaters, and electrical generators; * Observes steam, vacuum, water and other meters and gauges to determine operating condition of equipment; * Keeps records of fuel and water consumption, steam produced, and other operating data; * Performs tests on boiler water, condensate return water or chill water to detect the presence of harmful biological or chemical substances; * Adds chemicals to boiler water, condensate return water or chill water to combat harmful biological or chemical substances; * Exercises direct supervision over Assistant Engineer-Stationary III or Assistant Engineer-Stationary-Trainee where applicable. WHEN ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION WHICH CONTAINS STEAM GENERATING EQUIPMENT THE INCUMBENT ALSO: * Controls the generation of a continuous supply of steam by regulating the amount of fuel fed to each fire; * Operates equipment such as regulating starting devices, adjustment levers, and throttles to start, stop, and regulate the speed of pumps, boiler injectors, blowers, and auxiliary equipment; * Inspects, lubricates, and repairs equipment such as boilers, oil feed burners, stokers, pumps, motors, and associated equipment. WHEN ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION WHICH USES TRANSPORTED STEAM FOR HEATING AND REFRIGERATION, THE INCUMBENT ALSO: * Inspects the facility to ensure proper operation of fans and pumps in machinery rooms, proper reduction of incoming steam at steam traps, proper operation of refrigeration equipment, and acceptable condition of cooling towers and related equipment; * Maintains, lubricates, and repairs equipment such as steam traps, steam lines, pumps, motors, fans, refrigeration units, heating and cooling coils, filters, and associated equipment; * Operates such equipment as steam turbines, refrigeration units, electrical generators, and pneumatic control panels. Requirements: Required Qualifications: Must currently hold the Monroe County civil service title Assistant Stationary Engineer, Grade II, or be reachable on the current eligible list for this title, or meet the below minimum requirements for a provisional or temporary appointment, if offered: Graduation from high school or the possession of an equivalency diploma, plus two (2) years of full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam and refrigeration lines. NOTE: Where education is lacking, experience in any of the following areas may be substituted on a year-for-year basis: * (A) Operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam and refrigeration lines; * (B) Operation of a refrigeration plant; * (C) A related skilled trade (i.e., pipe-fitting, plumbing, electrical work, millwright, masonry, carpentry, general mechanical repair ONLY). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a Second-class Stationary Engineer's license issued by the Examining Board of Stationary Engineers and Refrigerator Operators. Activate additional boilers as necessary. * Remove water samples and perform tests. Check results and treat water with chemicals as necessary and blow off impurities. Test and control the hardness level of Hospital water. Must record results and action taken in log. * Perform corrective repair work as circumstances dictate until maintainer is in control of the equipment or system. * Monitor the Hospital oxygen and nitrous oxide supplies and pressure and reorders as necessary. * Cleans boiler room and basement equipment and perform related custodial and cleaning duties as necessary * Train and supervise the work of Plant Operations Assistant. Ensure that correct and safe work practices are followed. * Perform routine maintenance work such as unclogging drains and repair heating, cooling and ventilation equipment in patient care areas and offices throughout the Health System. Requirements * Read, write and perform simple calculations at a level generally acquired through completion of a general high school or technical school education plus six months or less of special preparation outside of school. * Operate and maintain boilers, turbines, steam engines, pumps, condensers, chillers and air conditioning units at a level generally acquired through two to three years experience in boiler room operations. * Must be licensed as a Stationary Engineer by the Department of Industrial Relations, State of Ohio. * Use good judgment in working in general to perform independently but in situations where the procedures have been previously established. * Requires responsibility for material and equipment. Probable cost in case of improper or careless handling of materials and/or equipment would be substantial. * Direct one other employee. * Must have valid Ohio driver's license. * LMH is accredited by DNV and TJC, and as such, may require specific annual education related to specialty certifications and standards.
