Who We Are

Utilities is a division of Facilities and Operations, made up of 125 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

Responsibilities*

* Responsible for the monitoring and operations of high pressure gas and oil fired super-heated boilers along with steam turbine and gas turbine generators, including all auxiliary and supporting equipment.
* Start-up, synchronize, load and unload electrical generators.
* Perform periodic rounds of inspection for the power plant, checking for the proper function of equipment.
* Test and maintain boiler water chemistry as prescribed by the plant chemist guidelines.
* Primary responsibility of directly operating and maintaining all equipment within the plant in a safe, reliable and efficient manner and in full compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, Central Power Plant (CPP) policies and procedures.
* Perform responsibilities and assigned duties as a member of a watch standing team.
* Perform preventative maintenance tasks on power plant systems (including all plant auxiliary systems) and ensures their safe, proper and efficient operation.
* Ancillary duties include writing and reviewing procedures, on-the-job and classroom training and root cause analysis investigations, providing basic maintenance, filling in for employees in other job classifications, and performing other tasks as needed.

Required Qualifications*

* A high school diploma or a trade school equivalent.
* Must have a valid driver's license.
* At least 2 years of maritime or powerhouse experience with super-heated boiler, gas turbine generator and steam turbine generator operations.
* Knowledge and understanding of mathematics in the industrial environment, including basic physics and chemistry for power plant operations, process equipment and instrumentation fundamentals, steam system basics, and boiler and turbine operations.
* Considerable mechanical aptitude.
* Thorough knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
* Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of high-pressure boilers, turbines, generators and related equipment.
* Thorough knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in high-pressure boilers along with steam and combustion generators.
* Ability to maintain and prepare routine operations records and reports.
* Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
* Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise. This includes, but is not limited to, operating valves, inspecting equipment, traversing under and over obstacles, ascending/descending ladders, and being able to transport up to 50lbs.
* Act in accordance with the Facilities and Operations' guiding principles: respect, collaboration, proactive, solutions-based and responsibility to the environment.

Work Schedule

Following the initial training period, this position is on a 12-hour rotating shift schedule.
