PPL company history timeline

1997

Two years later, in 1997, Pennsylvania Power & Light Company changes its name to PP&L, Inc.

2000

With over 12 000 employees and more than 10 million utility customers in the United States and U.K., PPL Corporation is a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest utility companies in the United States According to Forbes, it is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world.

2010

In 2010, PPL completed the acquisition of two regulated utilities in Kentucky: Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities.

2011

In 2011, PPL completed the acquisition of two regulated regional electricity distribution companies in the United Kingdom.

2014

On June 6, 2014, PPL announced it would divest its electrical generation facilities to a newly formed company, Talen Energy.

In 2014, those hydroelectric facilities were sold to NorthWestern.

2015

On June 1, 2015, the Talen spinoff was completed, allowing PPL to concentrate on the transmission and distribution aspects of the electric utility business.

2020

In 2020, PPL initiated a formal process to sell WPD in order to position PPL as a purely United States-focused energy company and create additional shareowner value.

2021

The sale of WPD was completed on June 14, 2021.
