The first Le Pain Quotidien opened in Brussels in 1990, and within a few months 10 more locations opened, all serving the classic, rustic loaves Alain grew up with.
After founding Le Pain Quotidien in 1990, Coumont had a firm hand on the dough but a less tenacious grip on the money.
In 1992, he and Coumont formed a separate restaurant, Le Pain et Le Vin, in Uccle, Belgium, which continues to this day, though neither founder remains associated with it.
In 2003 they bought the brand back from Van de Kerkhove, and PQ Licensing owned both the rights and the United States stores.
