Summary

The quality control specialist serves a critical role in the creation of an accurate and comprehensive medical record. They act as the liaison between the physician and the clinical team to ensure complete and accurate documentation. All obstetrical, gynecological, neonatal head and abdomen scans and physician consults are reviewed daily by QC prior to being released to the referring physician and facilities.

The coder/medical billing specialist aspect of this position is to assign diagnosis and procedure codes according to provider documentation, adhering to the official coding guidelines set forth by the AMA, ICD-10-CM, AHIM, CMS, and HCFA.

Nature and Scope

The quality control specialist is responsible for improving overall quality while looking for potential errors in the medical record documentation. This is performed by evaluation of physician and clinical documentation combining clinical practice and medical language. Documentation is evaluated for completeness, consistency, and accuracy not only for the current date of service but by comparing documentation from previous studies.

The coder/medical billing specialist is responsible for assigning and reporting specified codes from provider documentation. This position interfaces routinely with physicians, managers, and office staff, to ensure documentation is clear and concise, to maintain a continuous flow of information processing. This position is responsible for ensuring providers are notified of addendums to documentation as needed, to ensure accurate and timely processing of all third-party billing (claims).

Principal Responsibilites

1. CPT and ICD-10 coding of all ultrasounds, non-stress tests, consults, and rounding.

2. Provide quality review of all ultrasounds, non-stress tests, consults and rounding notes to verify accuracy and consistent documentation.

3. Verify the clinical documentation supports the service(s) being billed.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Patient Care Technician (PCT)/Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is employed by Miami Valley Hospital to enhance the nature and quality of patient care through a relationship with a Registered Nurse (RN)/Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The PCT/HUC assists the RN/LPN by performing assigned tasks for which he/she has been trained which facilitate direct patient care and the nursing process.

NATURE and SCOPE

When providing direct patient care, the PCT/HUC works under the direction of the RN/LPN and is accountable to the RN/LPN for patient care activities. Patient care is delegated at the judgment and assessment of the RN/LPN. The RN/LPN remains responsible and accountable for patient care and outcomes. The PCT/HUC is responsible for performing the tasks as delegated by the nurse. The tasks delegated are those that are in accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing set by Miami Valley Hospital. When acting as Health Unit Coordinator, the PCT/HUC coordinates the day to day activities of the nursing unit. The PCT/HUC coordinates unit activities involving requisitioning of supplies and services, and coordinates communications of the nursing unit. * High School diploma or equivalent certificate
* Qualified applicants must be a Certified Medical Assistant, and will have graduated from a recognized Medical Assistant program.
* Prior experience in ambulatory health care facility preferred
* Ability to learn related center tasks and be of assistance to management and physicians.
* Self-motivated to achieve the highest patient care and customer service

standards.
* CPR certified within the first 3 months of employment.
* Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding
* Familiarity with the EPIC EMR is strongly preferred.
* Thorough understanding of HIPAA law.
