A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COOK
As a Cook, you spend your day performing complex food preparation work and entry level routine cashier responsibilities. Your work typically involves preparing, seasoning, and cooking food, and maintaining inventories and records of food consumption along with compiling and tabulating data, checking documents for accuracy and maintaining files. Your job is essential to the city, you will inspect food preparation equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas to ensure sanitary conditions. You will assist in making recommendations for improving cooking and kitchen operations and in reviewing and planning menus to determine types and quantities of food to be prepared. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to the department as needed. The city needs someone like you with great people skills, problem solving skills, and finds genuine enjoyment in what you do!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A COOK
Required Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalency
Educational Substitute: Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Work Experience: Requires one (1) to three (3) years' experience in restaurant food preparation and cashiering responsibilities.
Able to obtain Food Handler's permit.
Must have a current and valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Overview
The Entry Level Cook is responsible for preparing menu items utilizing cooking equipment in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Culinary Students and people with little to no experience are encouraged to apply. The Cook must adhere to high food quality standards to ensure guest satisfaction. Portion control, food waste and sanitation are additional areas that the Cook must be aware of while operating in the kitchen.

Responsibilities
Responsible for cooking and packaging food product which is prepared to for banquets and special events.
Responsible for maintaining quality and production standards on all menu items. Food must be fresh and of high quality when served to the guests.
Responsible for portion control and serving temperatures of all products.
Responsible for cleaning, stocking and restocking of workstations and displays.
Responsible for operating large-volume cooking equipment such as grills, deep-fat fryers and ovens.
Ensures that all work areas and equipment are clean, food products are properly stored, utensils are clean and put away and floor is swept and mopped at end of shift. The Cook must be checked out before ending the shift by the Floor Supervisor to ensure that work areas meet cleanliness standards.
Maintains sanitation, health and safety standards in work areas.
Must show demonstrated ability to meet the company standard for excellent attendance.
Ability to communicate with employees, co-workers, volunteers, management staff and guests in a clear, business-like and respectful manner which focuses on generating a positive, enthusiastic and cooperative work environment.
Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
Ability to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced, event-driven environment.
Possess valid food handling certificate if required by state and federal regulations.
