Prescott Unified School District company history timeline

1867

In 1867, a small log cabin, the first school in Arizona, was built in the shade of this great cottonwood.

1890

Opened in 1890 at the location of 20th and Cherry Streets, the first Prescott School had been built by Contractors Chidester and Narras for a cost of $25,990.

1907

The unit began as a school for the deaf in Lincoln in 1907.

1908

On March 10, 1908, the taxpayers of School District #1 authorized the Board to hold a special election for a bond issue, and on July 12, the election went in favor of the sale of bonds — 119 to 1.

1909

The contract to build in the amount of $19,480 was given to Clinton Campbell, and the project for the erection of the north building was completed by late 1909.

1939

The original three buildings were constructed of solid, enduring materials as part of President Roosevelt’s WPA projects in the early thirties and dedicated in 1939 as Prescott High School.

1949

December 1949: Miss Betty Elmen, Kindergarten Director is profiled in a news article.

1957

March 1957: Prescott student Larry Small gets his picture in the paper beside the volcano he built for the Science Fair.

In 1957 at the time of her retirement after 40 years teaching at Prescott, Miss Edna Fuchs (“rhymes with spooks”, she used to tell the students) recalled that one of her first students was the son of General Pershing.

1960

June 1960, pupils of the sixth grade write and produce a play about a family who traipsed across South America.

1970

In 1970, Principal Charlie Phillips began his term and remained at Lincoln for a total of 12 years.

1972

In 1972 the school began a total communication process which includes sign language.

1976

Peet! Prescott Building Superintendent Claude Peet got a surprise party in May 1976.

1979

1979: The Prescott Mime Troup performed at a Festival in Washington D.C.. The first weekend in April was one that 10 acoustically handicapped students won’t forget.

2003

Frank Lawhead assumed the helm in the fall of 2003, followed by Mr.

2009

Classroom time capsules were prepared to be opened the following spring, and grade-level capsules were prepared for opening in 2009, Lincoln School’s Centennial Celebration! Lincoln School celebrated its Centennial September 25, 2009.
