In 2002, he was named acting president of the University following the resignation of Mary Sue Coleman, who accepted the presidency of the University of Michigan.

At that time, the institution was called the Cikarang School of Engineering (Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Cikarang). On April 16, 2004, the Ministry of Education granted President University official status as a full-fledged university.
The research enterprise grew significantly, to more than $330 million in sponsored grants and contracts in FY 2015 in support of more than 2,100 projects, with the Miller School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Health Studies leading the state in National Institutes of Health funding.
