Pret a Manger company history timeline
The first shop outside of London was opened on Broad Street, New York, in 2000.
Capital came in part from the sale in 2001 of a 33 percent stake to McDonald's for £50 million.
The company started moving abroad at the start of the decade with outlets in New York and Japan, then Hong Kong in 2002 and, more recently, Singapore.
After opening 20 shops in Britain last year, Metcalfe is planning for another 25 in 2007, plus 3 in New York and 4 in Hong Kong and Singapore.
The first Veggie Pret opened as a pop-up experiment back in 2016 and we've been growing ever since.
In 2016, its group sales were £776 million.
On 29 May 2018, JAB Holding Company announced that it would acquire Pret A Manger from Bridgepoint.
In May 2019, Pret bought rival chain Eat for an undisclosed sum - originally planning to convert many branches into Veggie Pret shops.
On 27 August 2020, the company announced that it would cut 2,890 jobs from its UK workforce (more than a third of the current employees). The primary reason given was a severe downturn in trade.
