A Brief Overview The Physician Assistant (PA) functions under this Physician Assistant Job Description approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). Specific functions pertaining to the Service, Clinic or Department are established by the PA and his/her supervising physician(s), and approved by the appropriate medical and nursing administrators, the IDPC, the Credentials & Privileges Committee, the Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) Medical Executive Committee and the SHC Board Credentials, Policies and Procedures Committee. Locations Stanford Health Care What you will do Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty. Obtains complete histories and performs pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients. Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient. Administers medications according to the formulary protocol or upon patient-specific approval from the supervising physician, or transmits orally or in writing on a patient?s record, a prescription from the supervising physician to a person who may furnish such medication. All controlled substances in Schedules II-V inclusive require a patient-specific approval by a supervising physician in advance of transmittal of the order or administration of the medication [see Standardized Procedure: Administering, Ordering, Furnishing or Prescribing of Drugs; Formulary Protocol]. Orders and collects specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products. Orders physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Obtains informed consent, as indicated. Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork. As directed by the supervising physician, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders the necessary tests and medications. Performs surgical procedures in the personal presence of the supervising physician. Recognizes and considers age-specific needs of patients. Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds. Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary. Facilitates the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.     The Division of Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH) is seeking a new faculty member with a focus on health services research to advance primary care delivery to join at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the University Tenure Line or University Medical Line. Successful candidates must not only have training in the general field of health services research but have a strong interest and demonstrated talent in applying that interest at the institutional level. This interest and talent should be matched with methodologic training and strong potential for influential publication and mentorship. Candidates across the translational spectrum from clinical trials to implementation science are encouraged, and those with applied research objectives and an emphasis on clinical care related to disease prevention, chronic disease management, population health strategies, social drivers of health, and implementation of technology to enhance clinical care will find the most opportunities. The clinical content area should be within the broad bounds of our Division to include primary care, general internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, and palliative care. We are particularly interested in candidates who have an MD, DO or equivalent with board eligibility or certification in medicine (general internal medicine, family medicine, or geriatrics), and post-doctoral training is preferred. We are seeking dynamic, creative individuals to develop their own research program in collaboration with other faculty members. Successful and qualified candidates will exhibit accomplishment in research that applies theory and evidence to understand and address problems in health care delivery and potential to test organizational innovations that improve the value. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to our mission through education and teaching including training and mentoring of residents, fellows and other trainees in graduate programs associated with the Stanford University School of Medicine. The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching. The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill. Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The candidate should have a growing track record of publication and funding commensurate with experience. The research activities of the Division of Primary Care and Population Health are diverse. Current areas of focus include health policy, quality of care, delivery system innovation, pain and symptom measurement and management, goals of care communication, global health, appropriate use of medications, health informatics and other applications of technology and bioinformatics, organization science, implementation science, health economics, and biomedical ethics. Many crosslinks exist with researchers in other clinical Divisions and Departments as well as the Departments of Health Policy and Epidemiology in the School of Medicine, as well as the Schools of Business and Engineering.
