For more information, visit ************* Responsibilities A Student Nurse Extern may only practice professional nursing under the supervision of a licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse. “Supervision” is defined as the physical presence in the practice area or unit where the extern is providing patient care. The extern is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process and that is within the scope of practice as determined by the state board of nursing and organizational policies and procedures. Prepares and affixes medication labels; Counts and pours dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist and prepares non-sterile compounds. Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques while under supervision Qualifications Education: High school diploma is the minimum required. College courses are desirable but not required. License and Certification: Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Must obtain a certified technician certificate within one year of hire. All technicians must maintain registration and certification throughout their employment with the UC Health Pharmacy Department. Experience: No experience required. One to two years equivalent experience preferred. Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff; handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; set priorities and solve problems; respond quickly to emergency requests; communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and assist in meeting the pharmaceutical care needs of the patient populations served by the organization.
