Prince George's County is also responsible for developing and delivering the County's public recreation programs. The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George's County, is seeking aParks/Facilities Maintenance Leader w/CDL. TheArts and Cultural Heritage Divisioncoordinates and manages four arts facilities; five historic rental properties; the Prince George's Equestrian Center at The Show Place Arena; community arts services; youth and teen arts services; art exhibitions; visual and public art for Commission and Department facilities; and other programs serving County arts organizations, artists, and residents. Programs include art camps; visual and performing arts classes and events; teen art initiatives; art exhibitions; performances in music, dance, and theatre for all ages; touring performances for school children; a community park summer music series and festival, Shakespeare in the Parks; artist studios; rental facilities for arts and non-arts organizations; artist residencies; and rental of historic sites for social functions. The Division staff coordinates various cultural heritage events including Hispanic Heritage Month and, Black History Month programs and poster internships; Asian Pacific Heritage Month programs and receptions; the Celebrate Africa festival; etc. This position is located at The Show Place Arena/Prince George's Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD and is required to manage the operations, maintenance, and safety of outdoor and equestrian facilities. This leadership role involves supervising staff, maintaining grounds and infrastructure, operating heavy equipment, and ensuring the safety of patrons and animals. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience, strong leadership capabilities, and a solid understanding of equine behavior and facility operations. Examples of Important Duties Facility & Grounds Maintenance * Perform routine grounds keeping: mowing, watering, trimming, leaf removal, and trash collection. * Maintain roads, trails, parking lots, barns, and arenas. * Implement erosion control and address animal hazards (e.g., fox/groundhog holes). * Conduct seasonal maintenance and support event readiness. * Clean stalls and shed rows as needed. General Repairs & Carpentry * Execute interior and exterior facility repairs. * Repair fences, stalls, bleachers, concrete, and asphalt surfaces. * Install signage and perform painting tasks. * Serve as point of contact for facility projects and inspections. Heavy Equipment Operation * Operate and maintain equipment including Bobcat, loader, tractor, water truck, backhoe, and dump truck. * Use attachments for grading, leveling, and snow removal. * Maintain CDL with Tanker Endorsement and operate equipment safely during adverse weather conditions. Equipment Maintenance * Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance. * Lubricate machinery and identify worn or missing parts. * Lead emergency repairs during events and ensure equipment readiness. Staff Leadership & Supervision * Supervise full-time and part-time maintenance staff. * Train staff on safety protocols and operational procedures. * Manage scheduling and communication using digital tools. * Enforce safety standards and monitor compliance. * Maintain organization and security of tools and equipment. Equine Safety & Behavior * Apply knowledge of horse behavior to ensure safe operations. * Train staff on appropriate conduct around horses. * Respond to incidents involving startled or runaway horses. * Ensure equipment use aligns with Equine safety standards. Conservation & Sustainability * Promote efficient use of utilities (electricity, fuel, water, telecom). * Oversee recycling of paper, plastic, glass, batteries, and other materials. Leadership & Administrative Duties * Coordinate and assign daily tasks for operations staff. * Assist in hiring and onboarding new team members. * Review event schedules and distribute weekly work plans. * Ensure proper use of PPE and report hazards or incidents promptly. Minimum Qualifications * High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED). * Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance. * An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years. * Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment. * Pass Commission medical examination. * Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including: Preferred Qualifications: * Proven experience in grounds keeping, facility maintenance, and equipment operation. * Strong leadership and communication skills. * Ability to work under pressure in dynamic, event-driven environments. * Familiarity with equine behavior and safety practices. * Valid CDL with Tanker Endorsement (or willingness to obtain). * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and digital scheduling tools.
