On March 21, 1944, Prince George’s County opened Prince George’s General Hospital, a 100-bed hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.
In 1978, an acute care regional hospital, Laurel Regional Hospital, opened.
Then in 1979, the state’s first freestanding emergency medical facility opened (affiliated with Prince George’s General Hospital).
He was working for his father in 1981 when the elder Hogan — the last Republican to serve as county executive — proposed selling the county hospital to a for-profit enterprise.
In 1985, then-County Executive Parris N. Glendening (D) and the council called for an investigation into allegations of nepotism, unethical payments to board members and other misconduct.
The deal marks the end of a process that began in 2010 with early discussions between the medical systems and state and county government officials.
A 2011 study of the health needs of Prince George's County residents by the University of Maryland School of Public Health found higher rates of chronic disease such as diabetes and asthma.
The state and county will continue to provide financial help to the new system for several years with each providing $15 million in operating costs through fiscal year 2019.
Groundbreaking on the new facility is expected later this year with a planned opening for 2021.
