Application for Postdoctoral Researcher in dual-frequency comb spectroscopy at the nanoscale - Copy The Princeton University Department of Chemistry seeks to hire a postdoctoral researcher for an appointment in Prof. Herschel Rabitz's laboratory. The successful candidate will adapt a dual-frequency comb laser for use in conjunction with a unique tip-enhanced spectroscopy instrument, currently under development in Prof. Rabitz's lab, to produce the world's first nanoscale dual-frequency comb laser spectrometer. The resulting instrument will have many applications; notably, it will allow the spectroscopic characterization of nanoscale volumes in frozen cell sections, providing unprecedented maps of the distributions of small molecules within the cell. Determining the spatial distribution of small molecules within cells is crucial for understanding fundamental biological mechanisms, but it is currently not possible to do this for the vast majority of small molecules. The successful development of this instrument will permit addressing a host of unsolved problems in biology and has the potential to revolutionize the understanding of metabolism and signaling in healthy and diseased cells. The postdoctoral researcher will join an interdisciplinary team with strengths in physics, chemistry, and molecular biology. The existing team has successfully developed a cryogenic atomic force microscope that can characterize biological cell sections, and the postdoctoral researcher will adapt the setup for performing tip-enhanced dual-comb spectroscopy to identify cellular chemical species. The project is under the direction of Prof. Herschel Rabitz in the Department of Chemistry and Prof. Martin Jonikas in the Department of Molectular Biology. Seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join a dynamic research team on a project that will involve field-based and laboratory-based experiments. Increasing use of the offshore coastal ocean is creating novel challenges for managing trade-offs among traditional users such as fisheries and new users such as renewable energy and aquaculture. At the same time, climate change and rapidly shifting marine habitats present additional stressors that affect the stability and productivity of marine fisheries. The areas leased for wind energy on the continental shelf occupy a vast geographic region within which substantial overlap exists among wind energy areas and historical commercial fisheries. We encourage qualified applicants who are motivated to support realistic and just solutions to these challenges facing ocean use to apply. The position is based at the Haskin Shellfish Research Lab (located in Port Norris, NJ) at Rutgers University, and will include travel to meet with project collaborators and advisors from management and fishing communities. Funding is in place for 12 months, with possible extension subject to funding. The postdoc will be motivated to contribute to practical solutions to the challenges presented by overlap among fisheries and offshore wind development. The postdoc will help us assess the potential for fishery enhancement or aquaculture to mitigate the impacts of displacement from fishing grounds due to offshore wind farms on shellfish fisheries. Both approaches - stock enhancement and aquaculture - present exciting potential mechanisms to support future coexistence of offshore wind and sustainable domestic food production in federally managed waters. CUPR has multiple ongoing projects funded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, the US Department of Energy, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation and others that include a mix of research design, fieldwork, data science, simulation modeling, writing, and presentations. The overarching goal of the Postdoctoral Associate will be to systematically investigate, evaluate, and address both technical and non-technical (political, behavioral, social) obstacles to building and grid decarbonization. The successful candidate will work with a team of approximately 20 researchers in the built environment group at CUPR and will contribute research skills and training at the intersection of engineering and public policy with knowledge and experience of buildings and energy systems. Specific postdoc duties will depend on the successful candidate's skills and interests as matched to project needs, with time allowance to pursue independent, discretionary work. Responsibilities are expected to include a subset of: (1) Use advanced energy modeling to analyze energy efficiency, demand flexibility, and electrification measures in the building stock. (2) Use advanced community scale energy models to analyze high performance buildings and geothermal energy systems. (3) Assess technical and non-technical barriers to the adoption of renewable energy technologies, including geothermal energy. (4) Conduct analyses of existing codes, standards, and policies related to building decarbonization. (5) Author peer-reviewed publications and public reports on research findings.
