1989

Also in 1989, Oliver Grin, MD, orchestrated the opening of the only neuroscience intensive care unit in the city.

1992

Also in 1992, Blodgett Memorial Medical Center merged with Ferguson Hospital, which specialized in colon and rectal diseases, to form the premier Ferguson-Blodgett Digestive Disease Institute.

1993

The children's hospital originally opened in 1993.

1996

Spectrum Health is formed after a 1996 decision by the United States District Court, which approved the merger of Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and Butterworth Health Corporation.

1997

Since 1997, philanthropic support provided gifts totaling more than $408 million.

2002

A gift from Rich and Helen DeVos in 2002 enabled Spectrum Health to purchase the property for the pavilion.

2004

Kim Horn, president and CEO, receives the 2004 Ellis J. Bonner Outstanding Achievement Award from the Michigan Association of Health Plans.

2009

Barrington received the Individual Contribution Award for her instrumental work in the 2009 start-up of the Midwest AMCP chapter.

2013

The adult program, supported by philanthropy from the community, began performing transplants in February 2013.

In 2013, PHC took a big leap when the organization received a contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other insurance payers, that enabled it to open it’s doors as a full-fledged community clinic.

2014

MedNow™ launches in 2014, giving patients fast, convenient and affordable ways to receive care by connecting to Spectrum Health physicians and advanced practice providers through a smartphone, laptop or computer.

2015

Spectrum Health’s adult blood and marrow transplant program reaches another milestone when it performs its 200th transplant on December 31, 2015.

2016

In January 2016, PHC opened a second location in Gretna, La.

Spectrum Health receives the 2016 Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service, one of the most revered community service awards in health care, for its programs and services to reach the underserved residents of West Michigan.

Priority Health Choice earns the highest ranking in all five categories for the 2016 Medicaid Health Plan Consumer Guide.

CEO Michael P. Freed announces plans to retire in early 2016.

2017

Cigna analysis of actual number of doctors in the PPO Network as of November 1, 2017.

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) recommends the Priority Health HMO plan to continue serving as the essential health benefits benchmark for the state starting in 2017.

2018

Joan Budden, president and CEO of Priority Health, is named as a 2018 Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Women in Health Care based on career accomplishments, involvement in nonprofits and community organizations and mentoring others.

In 2018, PHC reached two new milestones, one with the addition of a pediatric clinic at the Wichers location, and the other, perhaps one of its most significant, with the purchase of the three-story building on Wichers Blvd. where it all began.

2019

Excludes hospitals in Michigan's Upper Peninsula; based on American Hospital Directory April 2019 data and Priority Health provider contracts.

Christina Barrington, Pharm D., vice president of Pharmacy programs at Priority Health, is recognized for her contributions to the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and AMCP Foundation at the 2019 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.

Priority Health’s Medicaid Care Management team is awarded the Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP) 2019 Pinnacle Award in the Community Outreach category for their Medically Complex Children Information Sharing Events project.

Priority Health announces an average 2.5% decrease in pricing for individual plans on the Affordable Care Act marketplace, defying national trends of 2019 rate increases.

Plans are to open a pharmacy at the Gretna location in the fall of 2019.

2020

Priority Health launches a new Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) beginning January 1, 2020—the only health plan to offer a D-SNP throughout Michigan’s entire lower peninsula.
