  • Virtual Opportunity - Bilingual (English-Spanish) Reading Tutors (Referral)

    Handsonphoenix

Private Tutor Job 10 miles from Chandler

    | Azura Literacy's virtual reading tutor program pairs volunteers with elementary kids to help improve their reading skills and instill a love of reading. Volunteers read with students one-on-one on Zoom, sharing digital children's books and materials to help kids read independently and listen to read-alouds. Our program serves kids who live in foster care and those living in low-income neighborhoods. Foster children and kids living in poverty have lower rates of reading proficiency than their peers and are more likely to suffer the negative impacts of illiteracy such as homelessness, incarceration, and a continued cycle of poverty. Kids who are not proficient in reading by 4thgrade are 4x less likely to graduate high school than their proficient peers. Currently in AZ, only 19% of foster kids are proficient in reading, and only 27% of kids from low-income homes are proficient. We know that literacy is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty and negative life outcomes, and we need your help to serve the most vulnerable kids in our communities! Many of our students are Spanish-speaking, and their parents would like assistance helping them read in English. We are in need of more tutors who are bilingual in English/Spanish. This program is virtual, so volunteers can serve from anywhere! Volunteer requirements: * at least 18 years old * bilingual (English-Spanish) * have basic computer skills (use of internet, Zoom, and web browsers) * have a laptop or desktop computer and solid internet connection * pass a background check/fingerprint clearance or have current, valid fingerprint card ($66 fingerprint application fee paid by Azura Literacy; $8.25 fingerprinting fee paid by volunteer) * pass a literacy screening * interview with the program director * attend a multi-day virtual training session * available to commit to at least one hour per week (split into two 30-minute sessions) * available to commit to at least one semester (12-15 weeks in Fall, Spring, or Summer) During the school year, our reading sessions are on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays every half hour between 3:30pm-6:30pm.
