II. RESPONSIBILITY
The responsibilities include but are not limited to; managing an adult felony case load, generating various reports on the probationer's activities, interfacing with various law enforcement and social services agencies, and performing frequent and random drug/alcohol screens and frequent and random surveillance in probationer's environment, and all under the direct supervision of the Chief Probation Officer. The probation officer makes decisions regarding aspects of case management independently. Errors in work are not readily detectable and could result in serious injury, possible death or an offender committing additional offenses.
III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
The contact will be with offenders, institutional residents, co-workers, social services employees, law enforcement personnel, court employees, attorneys and the public, etc. The purpose of these contacts will be varied and necessary in the rehabilitation process, coordinating services, and in ensuring that the probationer complies with all orders of the Court.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements: The physical activities of the position are identified as sedentary at times during office time and possibly physical at times of surveillance.
Physical Activity: The physical activity could involve restraining of an individual, chasing an individual, defensive activity from an individual especially during an apprehension. Otherwise, talking, hearing, listening, reaching, walking, and sitting.
Visual Activity: The visual activity includes close work as with computer and reading drug screens and far sight as during an apprehension.
Job Location: During office time there are environmental conditions such as exposure to urine borne diseases. Policy and Procedure relate to these issues and must be followed to the letter. Also, during surveillance time, there may be adverse environmental conditions relating to the weather and other usual outside driving conditions.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGERIAL FUNCTION

Job Overview\:
This is professional human services and social work involving the direction, supervision, and guidance of juveniles on probation and/or in placement outside the home.
Work includes working with juveniles, their families, school staff, and representatives from social service and law enforcement agencies to preserve the unity and welfare of the family; provide for the care, protection and wholesome mental and physical development of the juvenile; prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency and/or chemical dependency through a system that provides supervision, care, rehabilitation, treatment, detention, competency development, and community protection for the juvenile to avoid the juvenile becoming an adult offender; and ensure that juvenile pay restitution to victims as ordered by the court.
A position may be assigned duties in a specialized area such as a youth drug court program or restitution. Decisions made in the course of work can have profound effects on the juvenile and family and include imposing limits on curfew and peer associations; arranging for counseling, evaluations, and academic support; arranging for family-based counseling services; or removing youth from a situation or circumstances not in their best interest. Job Duties:

Working Conditions:
The work is performed primarily in an office environment and involves exposure to normal, everyday risks which require normal safety precautions typical of offices. Employees may be exposed to violent or non-compliant youth or family members and be on-call for work evenings and on weekends. Latex gloves are worn when obtaining urine samples.
Physical Demands:
This position requires activities such as sitting for long periods, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, lifting, moving, and carrying light to medium objects, operating office equipment. Work may also require driving for long periods in a variety of weather conditions.

The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:
* Supervises and monitors offenders granted intensive supervision by the court to ensure compliance with supervision terms and conditions, including court ordered financial obligations.

Employment Standards

* A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Requirements:
* Must meet minimum peace officer standards as specified in California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031, including but not limited to: not currently on probation for a misdemeanor; no prior felony convictions (unless fully pardoned); good moral character as determined by thorough background investigation (this includes a polygraph examination); submission of fingerprints for purpose of a criminal record check; and found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the powers of a peace officer.

As a DPO promotes through the career series to the senior or supervisory level, he or she may be required (depending on assignment) to undergo firearms training and quarterly qualification at the firing range, even if the individual chooses not to carry a firearm.

Summary of Job Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:
* Supervises and monitors offenders granted intensive supervision by the court to ensure compliance with supervision terms and conditions, including court ordered financial obligations.
* Prepares case plans and sets goals for offenders in accordance with conditions set by the court. Identifies offender needs and makes referrals for assessment to the court, mental health, substance abuse, and/or other appropriate programs or persons for assistance.
* Testifies in court and makes recommendations. Attends revocation/violation, status, and other court hearings to provide input pertaining to the offender's supervision.
* Processes offenders onto supervision in accordance with grant standards by completing appropriate forms and documents. Maintains records and documentation to record changes in address, employment, and other matters.
* Collects urine samples and conducts breathalyzer tests. Collects DNA samples from felony and selected misdemeanor offenders using a buccal swab collector.
* Conducts searches and seizures for contraband or stolen property, and makes arrests when offender is in violation of supervision terms and conditions. Facilitates and/or prepares necessary documentation for the detention and/or arrest of the probationer.
* Compiles statistical data reflecting number of offenders on supervision, terminations, warrants issued, transfers, and other information to assess day-to-day functioning of programs.
* Obtains certification in approved risk assessment tool (ORAS) and conducts assessments in a timely manner.
* May be assigned to cover comprehensive field work, the supervision of domestic violence probationers and sexual offense probationers, and probationers assigned to specialized dockets, including Men's Achievement Recovery Court, Recovery IS Empowering Court, Veteran's Court, Mental Health Court, and Kushinda Court.
* May be assigned to train new Probation Officers on the processes and procedures to properly perform essential duties and responsibilities of position, provide additional training of existing personnel as identified, and act as mentor for new hires to guide them in their initial development.
* Participates in training opportunities, court activities, projects, and committees as requested or required.
* Completes other duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
* Knowledge of: high-risk/need offender behavior and treatment; counseling; chemical dependency; sex offender behavior; domestic violence; social work; corrections; Ohio Revised Code as it pertains to probation functions; court system procedures and processes; criminal justice system; community social service agencies and resources; universal precautions for control of blood borne pathogens; Probation Services Department policies and procedures; community resources and programming.
* Ability to: establish rapport with high-risk/need offenders of various social and economic backgrounds; perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations; work with resistant clients; establish caseload priorities; physically make an arrest; participate in training to properly utilize a conducted energy weapon (Taser) and pepper spray; participate in a physical examination that includes an agility evaluation.
* Skill in: interviewing probationers, victims, and others; completing statistical and investigative reports; data input; operation of computer; application of job software programs; evidence-based safety; analyzing data and preparing modification programs; listening.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires an appropriate combination of formal education, additional training and courses, and work experience. There is not an exact level or mixture of these elements to indicate one will necessarily be successful in, or qualify for, the position.
For example purposes only, an acceptable combination of qualifications for the position is a bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or related field and three years of experience as a probation officer.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A valid state of Ohio motor vehicle operator's license is preferred in order to carry out job-related essential functions. Private insurance is required if private vehicle is employed for job-related functions.

The position requires no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
