Process Development company history timeline

1990

The Pilot Plants area/committee (then Area 12a, now Area 12b) was the only active area in the Engineering Group (Group 12). In the early 1990’s, the Pilot Plants area contributed with two sessions to the AIChE Annual and National Meetings.

Michael Hammer, former professor of computer science at MIT, wrote about BPR in his 1990 article “Reengineering Work: Don't Automate, Obliterate”, stating that rather than use technology to automate antiquated business processes, companies should eliminate these processes altogether.

1997

At the March 1997 Houston AIChE Conference Pilot Plants Committee Meeting the new structure of the group, shown below, was agreed upon.

1999

The transition to a full-fledged group, with all four areas active and expanded leadership was accomplished by the November 1999 Dallas AIChE conference.

2002

In 2002, its name was changed to the UMaine Process Development Center to reflect its broader capabilities.

2003

As the work expanded in scope and potential, Michael Bilodeau – a former paper industry researcher and University of Maine chemical engineering graduate – was hired as Director in 2003.

2009

In 2009, the PDC was awarded a Maine Technology Asset Fund grant through a competitive application process to implement major pilot paper machine upgrades, including an advanced integrated control system, and the installation of a new pilot coater.

2010

2010 | Kanban (software development)

2012

In 2012, a joint venture agreement with the USDA Forest Service funded the construction of a cellulose nanofiber pilot plant in Jenness Hall.

2018

In 2018, Doctor Colleen Walker became the Director of the Center.

2019

In 2019, the PDC was granted an award from the Northern Border Regional Commission to upgrade the nanocellulose facility to a continuous process.

2020
