The Sterile Processing Supervisor works under the supervision of the Sterile Processing Department Manager. The Supervisor has the responsibility, authority and accountability for the clinical, quality, safety, financial, and personnel management of the unit on a 24 hour basis. He/she ensures overall sterilization process is achieved in compliance with the standards set forth by regulatory agencies, i.e., ACHA, CDC, CMS, Joint Commission, and Department of Health including all documentation requirements; responsible for taking immediate action when there is a breakdown in sterilization process; ensures procedures and standards of practice are followed for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of reusable supplies and equipment; He/she/he directs and guides activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice; provides for a safe, clean and organized environment. The Sterile Processing Supervisor assists the Sterile Processing Manager in providing leadership and management within sterile processing and within region as needed. The Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the coordination of the 24 hour/7 day a week operational and clinical activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to personnel management to include personnel selection, orientation/training, scheduling, development/mentoring, performance appraisals, coaching and counseling, and disciplinary actions, intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities, quality control and process improvement activities, regulatory compliance and assisting with budget. Assists in the development of policies and procedures. In the absence of the Manager/Director, may assume responsibility and accountability for 24-hour management of the assigned department(s).
Essential Job Functions
Provides leadership and leads the sterile processing staff within the assigned department(s) in the accomplishment of organizational/departmental goals and objectives. Performs the functions of interviewing, hiring, scheduling, establishing priorities and assigning workloads, orientation/training, performance appraisals, coaching/counseling, disciplinary up to and including discharge as coordinated with the Manager or Director and Human Resources. Responsible for adhering to established human resource management policies and procedures. Coordinates and participates in the daily operation activities for the sterile processing unit. Responsible for the direction and development of all sterile processing functions. Performs duties of the sterile processing tech. Participates in the development of and assists with implementation of an education plan that addresses individual and departmental needs. Directs the orientation and training of new staff and provides ongoing education to staff. Creates an environment in which personnel can realize personal growth and development through active participation in departmental decisions, opportunities for professional growth and consistent application of personnel policies. Plans appropriate staffing practices by maximizing the utilization of resources; forecasts and anticipates the personnel needs of department(s) and productivity standards; maintains staffing at agreed upon budgetary standards. Assists Manager/Director with the development, implementation and maintenance of departmental policies, procedures and practices to ensure quality of care and a safe environment for patient/residents/staff. Organizes ongoing communication between Sterile Processing and all customers regarding all aspect of the department(s) Acts to resolve conflicts in a timely manner. Develops collaborative relationships with customers to enhance quality practice and quality outcomes. Participates in both short and long term planning for departmental functions and budgetary processes and fiscal control. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency safety standards relevant to job performance and ensures staff adherence to the same. Department Profile

The Surgical Services department performs more than 29,000 surgeries and almost 10,000 GI procedures a year in 43 operating rooms, eight GI suites and two parathyroid suites. As a level 1 trauma center, some of the most complex and challenging surgeries in the nation are performed here. The main operating suite contains 21 ORs including an integrated MRI suite, a dedicated trauma room and a 17-bay Surgical Prep Unit and 29-bay PACU. Our burn unit contains a specialized burn OR. The newly renovated Cardiovascular Transplant operating rooms have nine ORs including a hybrid OR and nine pre-op bays. The Surgery Center houses nine operating rooms and 27 pre-post bays. The Women's Surgery Center has four ORs as well as an IVF suite for embryo transfers and retrievals. We also operate a full time Pre-Admission Testing center along with a 36 bed Short Stay Center.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Sterile Processing Manager and following established policies, procedures, and guidelines assumes the responsibility for leadership of the decontamination, instrument assembly and wrapping, processing, and case cart area. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital. Responsible for monitoring staff performance and productivity requirements. Monitor the daily flow and needs from the Surgical Service department, hospital floor units, and TMG clinics. Interacts directly with the operating room staff, floor staff, medical staff, and vendors. Responsible for collecting and analyzing departmental data. Makes suggestions and implements process improvement strategies. Incorporates the use of Culture Care at all times and leads staff in the use of Culture Care behavioral expectations.

Qualifications Required Skills

High School Diploma or G.E.D required. CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification and CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) certification required.
