Job Summary: The Forester position is responsible to coordinate and manage the procurement of high quality and cost-effective timber to ensure a constant flow of logs into the sawmill. This includes evaluating forest land by interacting and building rapport with a variety of forest landowners. Duties & Responsibilities: * Procure high-quality timber in a wide variety of wood species. * Effectively and professionally interact and build relationships with private landowners, federal, state and local agencies. * Ensure all agreements, contracts, and internal documents are properly prepared, signed, distributed, and filed. * Oversight of logging and road building contractors. * Maintain close communication with sawmill management to determine log volume requirements. * Ensure log deliveries match mill consumption and size requirements while maintaining maximum cost efficiency. Requirements: * Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Forestry or related field with three years of experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience (five years). * Willingness to abide by established safety standards. * Team building, communication, analytical and critical thinking skills. * Proficiency in use of personal computers and related software applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). * Ability to develop, prioritize, plan, implement and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines with occasional extended work periods and weekend work. * Willing to work independently in an office setting and travel to destinations in the woods. Supervision, daily direction, training, and support will be provided by AMJV and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff. The field foresters and associated activities are supported with funds from NRCS and ABC. Primary Duties: Work with AMJV staff, NRCS, WV Division of Forestry, WV Division of Natural Resources, and other partners to: Promote forest management for priority wildlife species identified in the WV State Wildlife Action Plan by following best management practices. Identify and directly contact private landowners with forest management opportunities. Conduct site visits to private forest owners and provide technical assistance including the development of conservation plans. Work with NRCS staff to facilitate private landowner enrollment in NRCS programs. Identify additional landowners and future sites for forest implementation or habitat restoration on private lands. Complete all aspects of forest habitat management including: Layout and mark boundaries of project area(s). Survey project area boundaries and roads using GPS unit, then use collected data produce necessary maps using computer programs.
