The Mechanical Designer is responsible for maintaining effective mechanical design bases for transformer layouts and for providing technical expertise to customers both within and outside of the organization. This role will review projects assigned to them comparing customer specifications to other design data, noting any inconsistencies or special requirements. The Mechanical Designer will be expected to utilize any and all operating programs to function effectively. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Complete transformer mechanical design including internal and external layout of components and accessories based on documentation provided in project design folder, standard practices, and/or from technical advisors. Calculate dimensions, allowances, and specifications per standard procedures or general design knowledge of shop capabilities when standard procedures do not exist. Verify and update programs. Provide technical support and training of others. Assist the supervisor in the planning and scheduling of the design and detailing processes. Responsible for directing or executing corrective action when shop problems are encountered. Consult with shop and QA personnel on interferences or interpretation of engineering information. Assist on development projects as requested by supervisor. This may also include completion of standard processes or practices and computer programs. Recommend and develop new procedures to improve the efficiency of the design and/or detailing process. Provide support to Quote Designers, such as bid or preliminary outlines and mechanical optimization. Create solid model geometry to optimize tooling, providing low maintenance tooling insert features, and providing low maintenance parting line shutoffs, to promote maximum tooling life. * Simplify the injection mold during part design. Create solid model geometry minimizing cross-slide action to reduce the complexity of the mold. * Monitor the revision or construction of rapid prototype and limited production molds. Daily Responsibilities Industrial design at Milwaukee Tool is chartered to create compelling solutions focused on solving critical user needs. * Lead the development of new products with a deep understanding of user needs, exploring inventive solutions that enhance interactions between the user and the product or system. * Conduct competitive assessments, field visits, and trend research to identify unmet user needs and inspire innovative designs. * Explore conceptual directions through sketching, 2D illustrations, renderings, 3D CAD, and physical prototypes, ensuring compelling visual storytelling that gains team alignment. * Present design proposals in a phase-gate process, securing cross-functional consensus and ensuring strategic alignment. * Guide projects through all pre-production stages, including specifications for CMF (color, materials, finish), product graphics, and UI, while balancing cost, schedule, and performance trade-offs. * Collaborate closely with engineering, marketing, and product management teams to ensure designs are executed at the highest level. * Participate in project meetings, teleconferences, and design reviews, while also leading discussions with process partners and design peers. Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in industrial design or equivalent from an accredited institution. * 3-5 years of professional experience in product design and development, preferably in consumer products or durable goods. * Portfolio demonstrating strong product design, creativity, and problem-solving skills. * Proficiency in sketching, rendering, and CAD modeling, with experience using Blender, SolidWorks, KeyShot, or similar 3D tools. * Ability to effectively communicate design concepts through visual storytelling and strategic thinking. * Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
